The Bakery Cake Designer role at Hy-Vee is an exciting opportunity for individuals passionate about bakery arts and customer service. The essential function of the Bakery Cake Designer involves decorating bakery items with precision and creativity while managing customer orders both via telephone and in-person interactions. Job Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Six months or less of related bakery or customer service experience
  • Ability to lift up to 100 pounds occasionally with team lifting
  • Ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, reach, push, pull, grasp, and perform repetitive motions
  • Ability to see clearly at various distances with or without correction
  • Ability to work in a busy store environment with exposure to flour dust, noise, cleaning chemicals, and temperature extremes
  • Must pass pre-employment drug screening
  • Must report to work as scheduled and on time
  • Adherence to proper sanitation and safety procedures
  • Ability to communicate effectively with customers and team members

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Six months or less of similar or related work experience in bakery or customer service
  • Ability to solve practical problems with limited standardization

Job Duties

  • Provides prompt, efficient and friendly customer service by exhibiting caring, concern and patience in all customer interactions and treating customers as the most important people in the store
  • Smiles and greets customers in a friendly manner, whether the encounter takes place in the employee's designated department or elsewhere in the store
  • Makes an effort to learn customers’ names and to address them by name whenever possible
  • Assists customers by escorting them to the products they’re looking for, securing products that are out of reach, loading or unloading heavy items, performing other tasks in every way possible to enhance the shopping experience
  • Answers the telephone promptly and provides friendly, helpful service to customers who call including taking product orders
  • Takes customer orders at Bakery counter
  • Works with co-workers as a team to ensure customer satisfaction and a pleasant work environment
  • Checks orders for the day and sets up a timeline and production schedule
  • Decorates bakery items in a timely manner
  • Keeps current on new designs and trends
  • Ensures department standards are met
  • Checks cake orders for details such as size, deco pack, icing needs, dates daily and indicates supply needs
  • Orders supplies for decorating area and checks off the order
  • Delivers product and sets up wedding cakes on site
  • Communicates with bakery manager regarding displays, weekly ads and special needs on a daily basis
  • Checks product dates, pulls cases for work and lists items to fill or replace
  • Develops bakery orders for bakers on a daily basis
  • Tracks daily retail production
  • Identifies, with co-workers, tasks to be completed
  • Operates as a lead worker with part-time or other employees by instructing and reviewing work
  • Participates in employee cross training
  • Understands and practices proper sanitation procedures and ensures the work area is always clean and neat
  • Adheres to company policies and individual store guidelines
  • Reports to work when scheduled and on time
