The Bakery Cake Designer role at Hy-Vee is an essential position within the bakery department, focused on creating visually appealing and delicious bakery items that meet customer expectations. The role involves decorating cakes and other bakery products with attention to detail, artistry, and adherence to company standards. Beyond the decorating duties, this position requires strong customer interaction skills, including assisting customers in person and over the phone, taking bakery orders, and providing friendly, efficient service. In this role, employees will coordinate with the bakery team and management to ensure orders are accurately processed, timelines are met, and production schedules are well managed. The position also demands operational responsibilities like ordering supplies, maintaining cleanliness and sanitation standards, and occasionally setting up wedding cakes onsite outside the store. This is a non-exempt position with a starting hourly wage range between $14.00 and $17.50, depending on experience. The job requires physical capability to lift, balance, and perform other movements necessary in a busy bakery environment. Working conditions typically involve exposure to flour dust, cleaning solvents, noise, and temperature extremes. Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Six months or less of related work experience
  • Ability to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally
  • Ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force frequently
  • Ability to exert up to 10 pounds of force constantly
  • Visual acuity with or without correction including color vision and depth perception
  • Ability to perform physical activities such as climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions
  • Availability to work scheduled hours
  • Successful completion of pre-employment drug screen

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Six months or less of similar or related work experience
  • Ability to provide courteous and friendly customer service
  • Knowledge of bakery decorating techniques and trends
  • Ability to operate standard bakery equipment including mixers, ovens, turntables, airbrush, and cake machines
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Strong communication skills for customer interaction and order taking
  • Ability to follow company policies and safety procedures
  • Basic math skills including arithmetic calculations with fractions, decimals, and percentages
  • Ability to solve practical problems with limited standardization
  • Willingness to participate in cross training and instruction of other employees

Job Duties

  • Provides prompt, efficient and friendly customer service by exhibiting caring, concern and patience in all customer interactions and treating customers as the most important people in the store
  • Smiles and greets customers in a friendly manner, whether the encounter takes place in the employee's designated department or elsewhere in the store
  • Makes an effort to learn customers' names and to address them by name whenever possible
  • Assists customers by escorting them to products, securing items out of reach, loading or unloading heavy items, and other tasks to enhance the shopping experience
  • Answers the telephone promptly and provides friendly, helpful service to customers including taking bakery product orders
  • Takes customer orders at bakery counter
  • Works with co-workers as a team to ensure customer satisfaction and a pleasant work environment
  • Checks orders for the day and sets up a timeline and production schedule
  • Decorates bakery items in a timely manner using current designs and trends
  • Ensures department standards are met
  • Checks cake orders for details and supply needs
  • Orders supplies for decorating area and verifies orders
  • Delivers product and sets up wedding cakes on site outside the store
  • Communicates regularly with bakery manager regarding displays, weekly ads, and special needs
  • Checks product dates, pulls cases for work, and lists items to fill or replace
  • Develops bakery orders for bakers each day
  • Tracks daily retail production and identifies tasks to be completed
  • Operates as a lead worker with part-time or other employees, instructing and reviewing work
  • Participates in employee cross training
  • Practices proper sanitation and ensures the work area is clean and neat
  • Adheres to company policies and store guidelines
  • Reports to work when scheduled and on time
  • Wraps all products as necessary
  • Assists in other areas of the store as needed
  • Performs other job related duties and special projects as required
