The position of Bakery Cake Designer at Hy-Vee is a vital role within the Bakery Department. This non-exempt role focuses on the artistic and customer service aspects of bakery operations, specifically involving the decoration of bakery items such as cakes. The Bakery Cake Designer will be responsible for assisting customers both in person and over the phone, taking orders, and ensuring that every bakery item meets the high standards of the company. This role requires a strong blend of creativity, attention to detail, customer service, and teamwork.

In addition to decorating bakery items, the designer will play a key role in coordinating daily orders, managing production schedules, and maintaining inventory and supply levels for the decorating area. The individual must be adept at interpreting order specifications, including size, icing needs, and decorative elements. They will collaborate closely with bakery managers and other staff to ensure customer satisfaction and smooth department operations, including setting up wedding cakes on-site when required.

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • six months or less of similar or related work experience
  • must be physically able to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and up to 50 pounds frequently
  • vision requirements including color vision, depth perception, and field of vision
  • ability to perform physical activities such as climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions
  • ability to practice proper sanitation procedures
  • adherence to company policies and guidelines
  • punctuality and reliable attendance
  • successful completion of a pre-employment drug screen

Job Duties

  • Provides prompt, efficient and friendly customer service by exhibiting caring, concern and patience in all customer interactions and treating customers as the most important people in the store
  • smiles and greets customers in a friendly manner, whether the encounter takes place in the employee's designated department or elsewhere in the store
  • makes an effort to learn customers' names and to address them by name whenever possible
  • assists customers by escorting them to the products they're looking for, securing products that are out of reach, loading or unloading heavy items, performing other tasks in every way possible to enhance the shopping experience
  • answers the telephone promptly and provides friendly, helpful service to customers who call including taking product orders
  • takes customer orders at bakery counter
  • works with co-workers as a team to ensure customer satisfaction and a pleasant work environment
  • checks orders for the day and sets up a timeline and production schedule
  • decorates bakery items in a timely manner
  • keeps current on new designs and trends
  • ensures department standards are met
  • checks cake orders for details such as size, deco pack, icing needs, dates daily and indicates supply needs
  • orders supplies for decorating area and checks off the order
  • delivers product and sets up wedding cakes on site outside the store
  • communicates with bakery manager regarding displays, weekly ads and special needs on a daily basis
  • checks product dates, pulls cases for work and lists items to fill or replace
  • develops bakery orders for bakers on a daily basis such as orders cakes and sizes
  • tracks daily retail production and identifies, with co-workers, tasks to be completed
  • operates as a lead worker with part-time or other employees instructing and reviewing work
  • participates in employee cross training
  • understands and practices proper sanitation procedures and ensures the work area is always clean and neat
  • adheres to company policies and individual store guidelines
  • reports to work when scheduled and on time
