Within the university, the food service operations are managed by Chartwells Higher Ed, a division of Compass Group, which is a leading provider of food services and hospitality across educational institutions. Chartwells Higher Ed is committed to excellence in both food preparation and service, delivering high-quality dining experiences to students, staff, and visitors. Their operations at Saint John Fisher University are housed in Haffey Hall, positioned at 3690 East Avenue, Rochester, NY. This dedicated team focuses on creating an engaging and dynamic environment where employees are valued and encouraged to succeed.
The role of Baker at Saint John Fisher University is a full-time position that involves hands-on preparation and baking of a wide variety of baked goods including breads, pies, cakes, cookies, and other pastries. The position requires a solid understanding and application of baking recipes while maintaining high production standards and food safety protocols. Working at the university’s food service offers a unique opportunity for culinary professionals to contribute creatively and practically to the campus dining experience. The baker will be responsible for various tasks that ensure the quality, presentation, and availability of baked goods for daily consumption and catering needs. This role operates on a schedule that varies and may include occasional weekends and evenings, with weekday morning hours being a typical requirement. Compensation for this position ranges from $18.00 to $20.00 per hour, reflecting the need for prior baking experience and the value placed on the candidates’ skill sets.
The job is designed to support both the operational goals of Chartwells and the wider mission of Saint John Fisher University to deliver excellent service and promote learning and growth among employees. Candidates will find opportunities for professional development and engagement within the food service industry, supported by a team ethos focused on teamwork and customer satisfaction. There is also a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, ensuring fair treatment of all applicants regardless of background.
Additional responsibilities include monitoring inventory levels to avoid shortages, maintaining meticulous cleanliness and safety standards in line with corporate and OSHA guidelines, and delivering excellent customer service by directly engaging with diners and promptly addressing any feedback or concerns. The role also involves accurate record-keeping of waste and production metrics, contributing to efficient operations and sustainability efforts.
Staff members in this position benefit from a broad range of perks including competitive wages, flexible scheduling options, and access to specialized benefits like Instapay via the One @Work app, as well as health and wellness programs. Chartwells also offers comprehensive benefits packages for full-time team members, including medical, dental, and vision coverage, plus retirement plans and other voluntary benefits. This supportive work environment seeks individuals passionate about baking and eager to be part of a team that values continuous learning, quality, and community impact. Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis, emphasizing the continual need and inclusive hiring approach.
