Job Description
Hy-Vee is a well-established, employee-owned supermarket chain operating across the Midwestern United States. Committed to providing top-notch customer service and quality products, Hy-Vee has developed a strong reputation for its friendly atmosphere, community involvement, and comprehensive range of grocery items. With a focus on employee engagement and customer satisfaction, Hy-Vee prides itself on fostering a supportive work environment where every team member is valued. As a company that promises "a helpful smile in every aisle," Hy-Vee recognizes that these smiles come from a workforce that is fully engaged, committed, and passionate about serving customers and supporting each other.
The role of Baker at Hy-Vee is integral to the bakery department, contributing to the company’s core mission by ensuring high-quality baked goods are available to customers daily. This role involves baking products to fulfill customer orders and replenishing bakery displays to maintain freshness and appeal. Beyond baking, the Baker offers courteous, friendly, and efficient customer service to both customers and fellow team members, consistently fostering a positive company image.
A Baker at Hy-Vee must master various baking techniques using equipment like mixers, proof boxes, ovens, sheeters, rounders, fryers, and more. The position demands a balance of technical baking skills along with interpersonal communication, as Bakers interact regularly with customers by greeting them, assisting with product location, and managing special orders. Bakers also take initiative in prioritizing and organizing workload, ensuring timely production and adherence to quality standards.
This non-exempt position requires responsibility for maintaining cleanliness and sanitation in the bakery department, following health and safety guidelines, and adhering to company policies regarding personal hygiene and dress code. The work environment is fast-paced and physically demanding, requiring the individual to handle significant physical activities such as lifting heavy items, standing for extended periods, and performing repetitive motions. Bakers also play a leadership role by guiding apprentice bakers, bakery designers, wrappers, and fryers, supporting their development and overseeing department operation when necessary.
Employees in this role must be able to solve practical problems, manage multiple variables, and interpret instructions effectively. A high school diploma or equivalent with over six months to one year of related baking or food service experience is preferred. Physical capabilities must include the ability to move objects weighing up to 50 pounds occasionally and the ability to perform various physical activities such as stooping, crouching, and reaching.
Hy-Vee offers a competitive starting hourly wage ranging from $17.00 to $21.25 depending on experience. Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a pre-employment drug screen. Hy-Vee values diversity and inclusion and invites interested candidates to apply and be part of a company that cares deeply about its employees and customers. With opportunities for growth, a customer-focused environment, and strong team support, the baker position is perfect for individuals committed to advancing their baking skills in a rewarding retail environment.
