Job Description
Hy-Vee is a well-established, employee-owned chain of supermarkets known for its commitment to exceptional customer service and quality products. Established in 1930 with headquarters in West Des Moines, Iowa, Hy-Vee operates over 280 stores in eight states across the Midwest. The company emphasizes a family-oriented culture, community involvement, and a strong work ethic, which has helped it maintain a loyal customer base over the decades. Hy-Vee’s core values revolve around respect, integrity, and a dedication to providing a helpful smile in every aisle, reflecting their genuine commitment to both their customers and employees. It is a company that not only focuses on grocery retail but embraces a holistic approach to health and wellness, offering pharmacy, nutrition, and wellness services alongside fresh food and bakery items.
The position available is for a Baker within the Bakery department. This non-exempt role focuses on producing a variety of baked goods to ensure that the bakery displays are well-stocked and appealing. The ideal candidate will be responsible for baking products in a timely manner according to daily orders, maintaining quality and freshness standards, and providing excellent customer service. Bakers at Hy-Vee play a vital role in sustaining the company’s reputation by delivering freshly baked products consistently while fostering a positive shopping experience through friendly interactions with customers and team members. This role requires attention to detail, efficient time management, and an active approach to anticipating product needs not only for the current day but also for subsequent days. Furthermore, the baker is expected to uphold strict adherence to sanitation procedures and company policies related to hygiene and dress code. The role involves equipment operation such as mixers, ovens, fryers, and proof boxes, making it essential for the candidate to have knowledge of baking and frying equipment maintenance issues.
Working at Hy-Vee offers an employee-centric environment that supports growth through training and collaborative teamwork. Bakers have the opportunity to lead bakery clerks and contribute to department scheduling and inventory management during the absence of the bakery manager. Given the physical nature of the job, candidates must be able to handle lifting up to 50 pounds, performing repetitive motion tasks, and working in environments subject to flour dust, temperature changes, noise, and equipment hazards. This role provides an excellent platform for individuals passionate about baking who thrive in fast-paced retail settings and want to contribute their skills to a company that values customer satisfaction and employee engagement.
