The Baker position at Hy-Vee offers an exciting opportunity to become an integral part of the bakery department, responsible for preparing and baking products that meet the highest standards of quality. This position demands physical stamina due to the need to move heavy items and perform various physical activities like stooping, crouching, and lifting. Working conditions may expose employees to flour dust, noise, temperature fluctuations, and occasional chemical cleaning agents, adding to the fast-paced and demanding nature of the job. Tools commonly used include mixers, ovens, fryers, labeling machines, and other bakery-specific equipment.

Job Requirements
- Must be 18 or older
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Six months to one year of bakery or related experience
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally and 20 pounds frequently
- Good vision including color and depth perception
- Ability to perform physical activities such as stooping, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions
- Must complete pre-employment drug screen
- Willingness to work in fast-paced and sometimes noisy environment
- Adherence to company policies and safety standards
Job Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Over six months to one year of related baking or bakery experience
- Ability to solve practical problems and interpret instructions
- Basic arithmetic skills including fractions, decimals, and percentages
- Strong customer service and communication skills
- Ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently
- Familiarity with bakery equipment and sanitation standards
- Leadership capabilities to oversee bakery team members
Job Duties
- Provide prompt, efficient, and friendly customer service
- Smile and greet customers in a friendly manner
- Learn and use customers' names when possible
- Assist customers by escorting them to products, securing out-of-reach items, and accommodating special requests
- Answer telephone inquiries and take product orders
- Check daily orders and set production schedules
- Prepare make-up dough, bake, and fry bakery products
- Review product freshness and pull stale items
- Invoice and store products as instructed
- Anticipate product needs for current and future days
- Inspect quality and quantity of incoming products
- Use and maintain bakery equipment properly
- Check signage for correct labeling
- Ensure department safety by identifying hazards
- Lead bakery clerks in daily operations
- Prioritize and proof products as required
- Maintain cleanliness and sanitation in work area
- Adhere to personal hygiene and company dress code
- Follow company policies and store guidelines
- Report to work punctually
- Order supplies and merchandise as directed
- Re-merchandise product displays and remove outdated items
- Write department schedule and manage staffing in manager's absence
- Assist in other store areas as needed
- Perform additional job-related duties and projects
