The Baker position at Hy-Vee involves specialized responsibilities within the Bakery Department. This role is key to ensuring the consistent production of high-quality baked goods that meet both customer and store standards. Bakers at Hy-Vee are responsible for producing bakery products to replenish displays and fulfill customer orders. They operate bakery equipment, follow safety and sanitation protocols, and manage inventory to ensure product freshness and availability. This role also requires effective communication and collaboration with various store management levels and fellow bakery staff, including Apprentice Bakers, Bakery Designers, Wrappers, and Fryers. Bakers act as leaders within the department by prioritizing tasks, checking the quality of incoming goods, and adhering to store policies. Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Six months to one year of similar or related experience
  • Ability to solve practical problems
  • Ability to do arithmetic calculations involving fractions, decimals, and percentages
  • Ability to copy data, interview for basic information, and provide guidance
  • Physical ability to exert up to 50 pounds occasionally and 20 pounds frequently
  • Visual acuity with or without correction
  • Capacity to perform stooping, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions
  • Must adhere to sanitation and company policies
  • Must report to work on time and as scheduled
  • Successful completion of pre-employment drug screening

  • Over six months to one year of similar or related experience
  • Ability to solve practical problems with limited standardization

Job Duties

  • Provide prompt, efficient, and friendly customer service by exhibiting caring, concern, and patience in all customer interactions
  • Smile and greet customers in a friendly manner
  • Make an effort to learn customers’ names and address them personally
  • Assist customers by escorting them to products, securing out-of-reach items, loading or unloading heavy objects, noting and communicating customer suggestions
  • Answer the telephone promptly and take product orders
  • Check daily orders and set up production schedules
  • Prepare, bake, and fry bakery products as needed
  • Monitor product freshness and remove items past stale dates
  • Invoice and store products as directed
  • Anticipate product needs for current and subsequent days
  • Inspect quality and quantity of incoming goods
  • Operate bakery equipment and report maintenance issues
  • Verify signage for correct pricing and labeling
  • Review the department for safety hazards
  • Act as a lead with bakery clerks
  • Prioritize orders based on customer and manager requests
  • Proof necessary items
  • Pull products from freezer or cooler
  • Adhere to sanitation and hygiene guidelines
  • Follow company policies and show punctuality
  • Order supplies as directed
  • Re-merchandise department products and discard outdated items
  • Write schedules and manage staff attendance in the absence of the bakery manager
  • Assist in other store areas as needed
