The role of Baker at Hy-Vee is a crucial position within the Bakery Department, responsible for preparing and baking fresh bakery products to meet daily demands and special orders. This position is non-exempt and typically involves an hourly wage ranging from $14.00 to $17.50 depending on experience. Bakers at Hy-Vee are expected not only to excel in baking skills but also to uphold exceptional customer service standards by providing friendly, courteous, and efficient service to customers and fellow team members alike.

As a Baker, you will be responsible for scheduling daily production, preparing dough and bakery items, monitoring product quality and freshness, and maintaining a clean and safe work environment. You will work with an assortment of bakery equipment such as mixers, proof boxes, ovens, sheeters, and fryers. This role also includes leadership responsibilities such as operating as a lead for bakery clerks and assisting with secondary tasks like inventory ordering and shelf merchandising. The position requires physical stamina and the ability to lift up to 50 pounds, as well as keen attention to detail in sanitation, equipment maintenance, and customer service.

Job Requirements

  • High school or equivalent experience
  • Six months to one year of bakery or related experience
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally and 20 pounds frequently
  • Must have good vision with or without correction including color vision and depth perception
  • Ability to perform physical activities including stooping, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment with exposure to flour, noise, temperature extremes, dampness, vibrations, equipment hazards, and cleaning chemicals
  • Must be punctual and reliable
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug screen

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Over six months up to one year of similar or related experience
  • Ability to solve practical problems with limited standardization
  • Proficient in arithmetic calculations involving fractions, decimals, and percentages
  • Ability to communicate effectively and guide others
  • Familiarity with bakery equipment and baking processes
  • Strong customer service skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Understanding of sanitation and safety standards
  • Leadership skills to operate as lead when needed

Job Duties

  • Provide prompt, efficient and friendly customer service by exhibiting caring, concern and patience in all customer interactions
  • Smile and greet customers in a friendly manner in and out of department
  • Make an effort to learn customers’ names and address them by name whenever possible
  • Assist customers by escorting them to products, securing hard-to-reach items, loading/unloading heavy items, noting and passing along suggestions, enhancing shopping experience
  • Answer telephones promptly and provide friendly, helpful service including taking orders
  • Check daily orders and set up timelines and production schedules
  • Prepare, bake and fry all department products as needed
  • Review product status and appearance for freshness and remove stale items
  • Invoice and put away product as instructed
  • Anticipate product needs for current and subsequent days
  • Inspect incoming products for quality and quantity
  • Understand bakery equipment use and maintenance needs
  • Check signage for correct labels on advertised items
  • Review department for safety issues
  • Operate as a lead with bakery clerks
  • Prioritize orders as per customer and department manager requests
  • Proof necessary items
  • Pull products from freezer or cooler
  • Practice proper sanitation procedures and maintain cleanliness
  • Follow personal hygiene and dress guidelines
  • Adhere to company policies and store guidelines
  • Report to work as scheduled and on time
  • Order supplies and merchandise items for department as directed
  • Re-merchandise shelves and remove outdated products
  • Write department schedule and manage employee attendance in manager's absence
  • Assist in other store areas as needed
  • Perform other related duties and special projects as required
