Job Description

Hy-Vee is a renowned employee-owned supermarket chain that prides itself on delivering an exceptional customer experience with the promise of 'a helpful smile in every aisle.' As a leading grocery retailer in the Midwest, Hy-Vee is committed to fostering a positive work environment where employees are valued as the company’s greatest strength. With a focus on teamwork, integrity, and continuous growth, Hy-Vee upholds its reputation for customer satisfaction and quality products across all departments, including its dedicated bakery section. The company is known for its community involvement and dedication to supporting local initiatives, which enriches its standing as a trusted brand in the grocery retail industry. At Hy-Vee, the bakery department plays a critical role in contributing to the overall customer experience by crafting fresh, high-quality baked goods daily, ensuring that every visit to the bakery counters leaves a wonderful impression on customers.

The role of a Baker within Hy-Vee’s bakery department is pivotal to maintaining the company’s high standards for product quality and customer service. They also play a leadership role in mentoring apprentices and bakery clerks, fostering a supportive learning atmosphere to enhance team skills and efficiencies. Key daily duties include preparing makeup dough, baking, frying items as needed, scheduling production timelines, inspecting product quality, ensuring proper sanitation, and maintaining safety standards within the department. The baker must be vigilant in inventory checks, order prioritization, and managing product freshness to reduce waste. Additionally, bakers are expected to be adept in using bakery equipment such as mixers, ovens, proof boxes, fryers, and sheeters, remaining proactive in reporting maintenance issues.

Hy-Vee emphasizes a strong customer service orientation, expecting bakers to greet customers warmly, assist with product inquiries, and contribute to an overall positive shopping environment. This role requires physical stamina to handle tasks involving lifting and moving ingredients and baked goods up to 50 pounds, as well as excellent attention to detail and the ability to follow company policies rigorously. The work environment is varied, occasionally involving exposure to temperature extremes, flour dust, and cleaning chemicals, requiring individuals to practice safety and cleanliness diligently.

Ideal candidates will have a high school diploma or equivalent and six months to one year of bakery or related experience, though department-specific training is also valued. Being 18 years or older is mandatory due to the physical and operational demands of the role.
