The Baker position at Hy-Vee is an essential role within the bakery department, responsible for the preparation and baking of a variety of baked goods that meet the high standards Hy-Vee customers expect. This role is non-exempt and typically involves working full time or part time hours, depending on store needs. The baker ensures that the bakery displays are replenished with fresh, delicious products while adhering to food safety and sanitation guidelines. In this role, the baker takes on leadership responsibilities, supporting and guiding apprentice bakers, bakery designers, wrappers, and fryers to perform their duties efficiently. Additionally, the baker is responsible for operating various bakery equipment safely and effectively, including mixers, ovens, proof boxes, fryers, and sheeters, while also reporting maintenance concerns when necessary.

Job Requirements
- Must be 18 or older
- High school or equivalent experience
- Over six months up to one year of related experience
- Ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and 20 pounds frequently
- Good vision including color vision and depth perception
- Ability to perform physical activities such as stooping, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions
- Ability to follow sanitation and safety guidelines
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with temperature extremes and exposure to flour, noise, dampness, vibrations, and cleaning chemicals
- Successful completion of pre-employment drug screen
- Adherence to company policies and timely attendance
Job Qualifications
- High school or equivalent experience
- Over six months up to one year of similar or related experience
- Ability to solve practical problems with limited standardization
- Ability to do arithmetic calculations involving fractions, decimals, and percentages
- Ability to copy data from one record to another, interview to obtain basic information, guide people and provide basic direction
- Strong customer service skills
- Ability to operate bakery equipment
Job Duties
- Provides prompt, efficient and friendly customer service by exhibiting caring, concern and patience in all customer interactions and treating customers as the most important people in the store
- Smiles and greets customers in a friendly manner, whether the encounter takes place in the employee's designated department or elsewhere in the store
- Makes an effort to learn customers' names and to address them by name whenever possible
- Assists customers by escorting them to products, securing products that are out of reach, loading or unloading heavy items, making note of and passing along customer suggestions or requests, performing other tasks in every way possible to enhance the shopping experience
- Answers the telephone promptly and provides friendly, helpful service to customers who call including taking product orders
- Checks orders for the day and sets up a timeline and production schedule
- Prepares make up, bakes, and fries all department products as needed
- Reviews the status and appearance of product for freshness and pulls by stale date
- Invoices and puts away product as instructed by the department manager
- Anticipates product needs for current and subsequent days
- Inspects incoming product quality and quantity
- Understands the use and issues related to bakery equipment and follows up on potential maintenance issues
- Checks signage for correct labels on ad items
- Reviews department for potential safety issues
- Operates as a lead with bakery clerks
- Prioritizes orders per customer and department manager request
- Proofs necessary items
- Pulls product from freezer or cooler
- Practices proper sanitation procedures and ensures work area is clean and neat
- Maintains strict adherence to personal hygiene and dress guidelines
- Adheres to company policies and store guidelines
- Reports to work when scheduled and on time
