Job Description

Brown University is a prestigious institution known for its commitment to academic excellence and diversity. Among its many departments, the Dining Services division plays a crucial role in providing high-quality food and dining experiences for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. As part of this vibrant university community, the Dining Services team emphasizes not only the culinary craftsmanship behind each meal but also the safety and sanitation standards that uphold the institution's renowned reputation.

The Baker position within Brown University Dining Services is a full-time, onsite role scheduled for 40 hours per week. This role is vital for producing a wide array of baked goods and desserts that align with the university's dining room menus and catered functions. The position operates under the supervision of experienced culinary staff and requires a strong command of basic and intermediate baking techniques. Responsibilities include the skillful preparation and baking of doughs, batters, fillings, frostings, and various pastries such as Danish Puff Paste and Cream Puff Dough. The Baker is expected to follow established recipes precisely to maintain consistency and quality across all offerings.

This role demands a deep understanding of culinary baking principles, including the proper use of flour types, leavening agents, and thickening mechanisms. The standardization and adherence to recipes and procedures ensure that all baked items meet the university's high standards for taste, texture, and presentation. Beyond production, Bakers at Brown University must also manage the sanitation and safety of their workspace and equipment. Proper disassembly, cleaning, and maintenance of all Bake Shop equipment are mandatory to keep the kitchen environment safe and efficient.

The position requires a keen awareness of safety hazards commonly found in a bakery setting—such as hot ovens, cutting tools, and slippery floors—mandating strict observance of safety protocols and use of personal protective equipment like cut resistance gloves. The ability to efficiently coordinate with team members, assist subordinates, and contribute positively to workplace morale is highly valued.

Bakers at Brown University are also encouraged to continuously improve their skills, potentially progressing to roles such as Second Baker. They are expected to maintain a neat, professional appearance and uphold the University's values of respect and cooperation. Physical demands include standing for extended periods, handling heavy supplies, and maneuvering equipment safely, ensuring the endurance and strength needed for this active culinary role.

All offers of employment are contingent upon the successful completion of a background check. Furthermore, the university prides itself on providing comprehensive employee benefits and fosters an inclusive work environment, underscoring its equal opportunity policies that protect against discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, age, and other protected characteristics.

This Baker role at Brown University offers an excellent opportunity for culinary professionals who wish to work in a supportive academic environment and contribute to creating exceptional dining experiences that complement the intellectual atmosphere of the university. It emphasizes both the artistry of baking and the importance of safety and hygiene in a fast-paced, professional kitchen setting. The position is not eligible for visa sponsorship, highlighting the university's hiring policies related to employment eligibility.
