In addition to the baking process, the baker plays an important role in daily cleaning routines, including the sanitation of machinery at the end of each day to maintain hygiene standards and ensure the safety of both employees and customers. Physical tasks such as lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, bending, and stooping are routine, reflecting the need for a physically fit candidate who can handle heavy products safely and efficiently. The candidate will also utilize various cleaning chemicals responsibly to maintain the bakery’s tools and equipment.

The baker is expected to handle products ranging from 20 to 60 pounds and move product on carts or dollies with loads reaching up to 200 pounds. This role requires constant movement within different temperature zones, including freezers, refrigerators, and ovens, emphasizing the need for adaptability and resilience in varying work conditions. Additionally, the baker will collaborate in receiving and fulfilling special customer orders accurately to uphold the bakery’s superior customer service standard.

Safety is a core component of this role, including strict adherence to health protocols like wearing the proper headwear (such as hats or hairnets), frequent and thorough handwashing, and compliance with all regulations to ensure a safe working environment. The role also involves maintaining a tidy workspace by sweeping and managing waste disposal properly. The baker will be required to retrieve products from various storage areas, including bakery coolers, proofing stations, and ovens, sometimes reaching above shoulder level or climbing ladders.

Job Requirements

  • Must obey all State and Federal guidelines regarding health and safety policies
  • Wear proper headwear: hat, hairnet, etc
  • Wash hands frequently with hot water from elbows down for not less than 20 seconds
  • Ability to lift boxes and products ranging from 20 lbs up to 60 lbs
  • Capability to push/pull up to 200 lbs on dolly/cart
  • Ability to bend/stoop to pick up or place product below waist level
  • Ability to work standing and walking constantly
  • Willingness to work in freezer, refrigerator, and oven temperature zones
  • Ability to handle cleaning chemicals safely
  • Ability to climb ladders to retrieve product from high shelves

Job Duties

  • Inspect machinery at beginning of day for potential repairs and report need for repairs to Bakery Manager
  • Prepare breads, pastries, etc
  • Clean machinery at end of day
  • Lift boxes and product ranging between 20 lbs up to 60 lbs
  • Place boxes/product onto dolly or cart
  • Push/pull between 30 lbs up to 200 lbs (items on cart/dolly)
  • Bend/Stoop pick up and or place product below waist level (including shelves and racks)
  • Place product onto bins and position for sale
  • Grasp/Grip product to prepare for sales floor by either cutting or cleaning product
  • Constant sweeping/pushing broom to pick up debris to keep work area clean
  • Place and remove product from Bakery cooler, proofing, and ovens (including shelving and bakery bins)
  • Reaching above shoulder level (produce placement on sales floor plus shelving/rack system in bakery warehouse areas)
  • Place debris/trash/recycle cardboard in respective areas
  • Will clean and maintain bakery tables and bins
