Job Requirements

  • High school degree or GED
  • 5 years bodily injury litigation claim handling experience or 10 years litigation experience
  • acquisition and maintenance of insurance license(s) may be required to comply with state and Travelers requirements
  • license(s) generally required within three months of starting the job

Job Duties

  • Directly handle the companys most severe and complex claims when coverage is 2 million or greater and file exposure greater than 2 million
  • provide quality customer service and ensure file quality timely coverage analysis and communication with insured based on policy and facts
  • investigate claims through contact with policyholders claimants law enforcement agencies witnesses agents medical providers and experts
  • interview witnesses and take statements as appropriate
  • complete outside investigations as needed
  • engage and direct internal and external resources such as subrogation risk control nurse consultants and fraud investigators
  • verify nature and extent of injury or property damage by reviewing records and documentation
  • utilize diary management system for timely claim handling
  • evaluate liability and damages exposure at required intervals
  • establish and maintain proper indemnity and expense reserves
  • share knowledge of creative resolution techniques to improve claim results of others
  • apply company claim quality management protocols and document any departure from these protocols
  • develop and employ creative resolution strategies
  • manage allocated and unallocated loss adjustment expenses
  • evaluate claims for recovery potential and directly handle or direct efforts
  • negotiate disposition of claims within delegated authority
  • ensure optimal resource application for best results at lowest cost
  • mentor and coach less experienced claim professionals
  • collaborate with field severity units providing guidance and strategies for complex liability claims
  • provide mentoring or training as requested by field severity management
  • consult with management on use of Claim Coverage Counsel
  • provide guidance to underwriting partners on reserve accuracy and changes
  • recommend cases for discussion at roundtables
  • attend and present at roundtables and authority discussions
  • update parties with new facts impacting liability and settlement
  • represent company as technical resource at legal proceedings
  • obtain and communicate information on legal trends
  • assist underwriting in marketing and account contact
  • participate in coverage liability and damages analysis for severity cases
  • assist in recognition of defenses to contain loss payout
  • actively participate in field severity roundtables
  • collaborate with severity unit to comply with company claim policies and standards
  • apply expert litigation management including selection and oversight of counsel
  • recognize and implement alternate resolution means
  • manage litigated claims including discovery and legal expenses
  • track and control legal expenses
  • develop innovative techniques to manage expenses with independent counsel
  • attend depositions mediations arbitrations pre-trials and trials
  • monitor independent counsel quality
  • participate in file quality reviews
  • handle personal and confidential information appropriately
  • fulfill service commitments to certain accounts
  • perform other duties as assigned
