Within UAA, the Aviation Technology Center located at Merrill Field Airport is a key facility supporting aviation-related education and industry partnerships. The center provides hands-on training, technical expertise, and resources to students, faculty, and aviation companies, fostering growth and opportunity in the aviation sector. As part of the university's on-campus services, the Aviation Technology Center seeks a Student Assistant 1 to join their team. This role is ideal for undergraduate students interested in aviation and office administration. The position offers meaningful exposure to university operations, aviation industry relationships, and valuable professional development.

This opportunity allows the candidate to develop critical skills in communication, organization, and technical proficiency while working in a dynamic, team-oriented environment. The assistant will handle inquiries over the phone, in-person, and via email, demonstrating professionalism and effective communication at all times. The role requires balancing multiple priorities, completing projects on deadline, and adhering to confidentiality standards.
Candidates for the position must have strong customer service skills, professional telephone etiquette, and solid command of verbal and written communication with good grammar and spelling. Basic computer skills, including familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel, Google Docs, Sheets, email, and other web applications, are also essential. The position emphasizes the ability to follow instructions, work independently as well as collaborate, and maintain confidentiality.
Employment as a student assistant at UAA also requires active enrollment in the University of Alaska system, meeting specific credit hour minimums and academic performance standards. The role supports up to 20 hours per week during the academic year with potential for up to 40 hours during summer. The pay rate is competitive at $18.00 per hour, offering both financial support and professional experience for students.
This role not only provides practical work experience but also positions the student for potential future opportunities in administration, aviation management, or related fields. The university provides a supportive work environment in alignment with its equal opportunity and non-discrimination policies. It also offers accommodations for individuals with disabilities, ensuring an accessible workplace for all employees. Background checks are required for the successful applicant to maintain security and safety standards. Those selected are expected to uphold the highest standards of ethics and professionalism in all university-related activities.
Overall, this Student Assistant 1 position at the Aviation Technology Center is an excellent chance for motivated undergraduate students to gain valuable workplace skills, contribute to a respected educational institution, and engage directly with the aviation community in Alaska.
