Job Description
Metro-North Railroad is a prominent public transportation agency operating in the New York metropolitan area, specifically servicing commuters traveling between New York City, its northern suburbs, and beyond. As part of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), Metro-North Railroad is committed to providing reliable and efficient rail services, ensuring the safety and comfort of millions of daily passengers. The agency prides itself on maintaining one of the busiest commuter rail systems in the United States, with a focus not only on transportation but also on delivering an excellent level of customer service and station maintenance. With a wide-reaching network, Metro-North is integral to the daily lives of countless New Yorkers, emphasizing safety, operational excellence, and community engagement.
The role of Attendant Operator in Terminal Appearance is situated within the Station Operations department, based primarily at the iconic Grand Central Terminal in New York, NY. This position is a regular, full-time employment opportunity classified as safety sensitive but non-DOT regulated under the MTA union agreements. The attendant operator plays a vital role in ensuring the cleanliness, maintenance, and overall appearance of the Grand Central Terminal. The work involves a variety of custodial and porter duties that directly impact the visitor experience and the operational integrity of the terminal. Employees will perform cleaning tasks in public access areas and employee welfare facilities, using both manual and powered equipment to maintain a safe, welcoming, and visually appealing environment.
This job requires the use of steady physical effort, as attendants will be responsible for sweeping, mopping, waxing floors, cleaning restrooms, offices, lockers, and windows. Attendants must monitor their assigned areas for cleanliness issues, maintain restroom supplies, and promptly communicate problems to the appropriate authorities, such as the Stationmaster's Office or Police Desk. Additionally, seasonal duties such as snow removal around the terminal demand attentiveness and proper use of snow-blowing and plowing equipment. This role involves working indoors and outdoors in various weather conditions, with exposure to chemical cleaning agents requiring adherence to safety protocols, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE). The position supports continuous operational standards, contributing to customer safety and satisfaction with minimal disruption.
Starting pay is competitive, beginning at $24.14 per hour (70% rate) with wage progression leading to a full rate of $34.48 per hour over several years, reflecting the commitment to employee growth and fair compensation as established by union agreements. Shift work flexibility is required, given that operations at Grand Central run around the clock. This job is not eligible for telework, emphasizing the physical presence and on-site responsibilities essential to station upkeep.
Metro-North Railroad offers an attractive package of benefits including commuter assistance, high-quality health insurance with lifetime retiree coverage, pension plans, paid time off, tuition reimbursement, and access to employee assistance programs. The organization fosters a diverse, inclusive workforce and encourages applicants from all backgrounds to apply. As a safety-sensitive position, the role requires candidates to successfully complete various background checks, physical and practical examinations, and a verbal interview to ensure fitness for duty and compliance with safety standards. Those currently employed by Metro-North may have additional eligibility criteria based on tenure and union rules. Overall, this role offers a unique opportunity to join a prestigious transit agency in maintaining one of New York's most important transportation landmarks, making a meaningful impact in public service and facility management.
