The Surgical Services Attendant Aide role at Mayo Clinic is essential in supporting the nursing staff within the operating room environment. This position focuses on assisting with indirect and direct patient care duties delegated by registered nurses to maintain smooth and safe operations. Cleaning and maintaining surgical areas and equipment are critical responsibilities that facilitate daily workflow and ensure compliance with infection control standards established by The Joint Commission and AORN. This role demands flexibility, strong communication, and the ability to collaborate with a multidisciplinary team including nurses, scrub techs, nurse anesthetists, surgeons, and anesthesiologists.
Candidates for this role will find themselves integral to maintaining patient dignity and safety, assisting with patient transport, positioning, and performing courier duties such as handling blood products and transporting specimens. This full-time position requires an 80-hour schedule, mainly Monday through Friday with a call schedule that includes weekends, nights, and holidays. Job Requirements
- Must live within a reasonable driving distance to campus to meet 45-minute on-call requirement
- High school diploma or GED must be verifiable
- Demonstrate age-related competency by completion of required education and post-test
- Demonstrate appropriate working knowledge of specialty equipment
- Ability to adapt to unpredictable situations within the patient-care setting
- Strong communication and computer skills
- Knowledge of medical terminology and general hospital/clinic procedures preferred
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required

Job Duties
- Assist the nursing staff with delegated tasks of indirect and direct patient care
- Clean and maintain assigned items and areas to facilitate smooth daily operations
- Maintain a clean and safe environment in the surgical department/suites following Joint Commission and AORN/Infection control guidelines
- Work closely with the nursing staff, scrub techs, Nurse Anesthetist, Surgeon, and Anesthesiologist as needed
- Be flexible to changing priorities and handle changing workflows
- Participate in Commitment to Safety by providing and collecting data to improve patient/staff safety and OR efficiencies
- Actively participate as a member of the patient care team maintaining patient confidentiality at all times
- Perform job duties to support patient care under the direction of nursing staff and function independently to complete assigned tasks
- Serve as courier for the surgical department by obtaining and returning blood products, obtaining beds for patient transfer, and transporting specimens to the lab in compliance with regulatory guidelines
- Assist circulator nurse, surgical team, and physician with patient positioning and provide patient dignity and privacy during transport and transfer if needed
