Job Description

Middlesex is a distinguished six-day-a-week residential school known for its vibrant community and commitment to excellence, located in the New England region. The institution prides itself on providing a rich academic and athletic environment for its students, balancing rigorous educational programs with robust extracurricular and athletic activities. Middlesex's athletic department plays a crucial role in the school's mission, fostering teamwork, discipline, and personal development through various sports and events held both on campus and at external venues. The school emphasizes the safety, efficiency, and operational excellence of its athletic facilities, ensuring that athletes, students, and the wider school community enjoy a supportive and well-maintained environment. This commitment extends to collaborating closely with different departments such as safety and security, facilities management, auxiliary services, and human resources to deliver unparalleled support and management of athletic operations.

The Athletics Operations Manager position at Middlesex is a pivotal full-time role that partners closely with the athletic department and facilities team to ensure the seamless execution of athletic events and the smooth operation of athletic facilities. The manager will focus primarily on the operational readiness, safety, and efficiency of athletic spaces including the fieldhouse, ice rink, and cage. They will coordinate game day logistics, manage event setup and breakdown, oversee equipment operation including ice maintenance (with Zamboni training provided), and supervise staff and contractors. This role demands a high level of collaboration with various stakeholders such as coaches, student-athletes, officials, visiting teams, and external renters, ensuring that events and facility rentals meet the highest standards of excellence. Additionally, the Athletics Operations Manager will act as a key liaison, helping to develop policies, procedures, and structures around athletic facilities usage and safety, both for campus community members and external parties.

The position requires availability during evenings, weekends, and holidays, particularly during the winter sports season, reflecting the need for dynamic scheduling and on-site support during events. Reporting directly to the Athletic Director with a dotted line to the Director of Human Resources and Auxiliary Services, this role holds supervisory responsibilities including hiring, training, scheduling, and managing assigned personnel and event contractors. The manager also serves on the School’s Events Planning Committee, contributing their expertise and perspective in aligning athletic events with broader campus activities. This role demands strong organizational skills, meticulous attention to detail, excellent communication capabilities, and a commitment to equity, inclusion, and cultural competency within the school’s diverse environment.

The job environment is diverse and dynamic, ranging from office settings to active athletic centers, icy rink conditions, and outdoor fields subject to all New England weather conditions. Physical demands include the ability to lift 30 pounds, navigate uneven terrain, and remain active for extended periods. Candidates must be proficient in Microsoft Office and Google Suite and be able to operate computerized maintenance management systems and mobile devices. The ideal candidate holds a bachelor's degree in athletic or sports management or has at least five years of relevant facility or rink management experience. Certifications in CPR, First Aid, and AED are required or must be obtainable, along with the ability to pass RMV, CHRI, CORI, and SORI checks.

This job offers a unique opportunity to contribute meaningfully to a respected educational institution’s athletic program while leveraging your operational expertise and leadership skills.
