Job Description

Moreau Catholic High School is a distinguished coeducational college-preparatory high school that operates in the Holy Cross tradition. Located in Hayward, California, Moreau Catholic High School is committed to fostering academic excellence, spiritual growth, and social responsibility for every student. The school promotes an environment that encourages students to develop as well-rounded individuals through rigorous academics, strong moral values, and vibrant extracurricular activities. As a Catholic institution, it seeks to nurture the mind, body, and soul of its students, encouraging them to live the Holy Cross mission of educating both heart and mind.

Moreau Catholic High School is currently seeking a dedicated Varsity Boys' Water Polo Head Coach to lead its competitive water polo program. The head coach will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of the high school boys' water polo team, including player development, coaching strategies, leadership, and creating a positive, sportsmanlike culture. This position comes with an annual stipend of $4,000 and requires a deep commitment to the school's mission and values.

The Varsity Boys' Water Polo Head Coach will play a critical role in fostering a competitive yet inclusive environment that focuses on teamwork, discipline, and personal growth. This role demands a coach who is passionate about developing student-athletes holistically—emphasizing not only technical skills and game strategies but also character building and leadership development. These qualities are integral to the Holy Cross tradition and essential for sustaining a successful and respected water polo program.

The coach’s responsibilities include planning, organizing, and leading all practices, games, and team activities while working closely with the athletic director and junior varsity coaching staff. A key aspect of the role involves scheduling games and practices following Northern California Section (NCS) and California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) regulations. Due to Moreau Catholic's lack of an on-campus pool, all practices and competitions occur at off-campus facilities, requiring the coach to efficiently manage logistics such as transportation, facility coordination, and equipment handling.

In addition to athletic development, the head coach serves as a mentor, promoting values such as sportsmanship, confidence, self-discipline, and moral integrity in accordance with the Holy Cross educational philosophy. Effective communication skills are necessary to maintain open dialogue with players, their families, assistant coaches, and school administration to ensure a transparent and supportive team environment. Moreover, the head coach collaborates with the admissions department to recruit and retain potential student-athletes interested in joining Moreau Catholic High School, as well as assisting in their collegiate recruitment processes.

The coach will be expected to uphold safety standards during all team activities, ensuring the well-being of all athletes under their supervision. Participation in the broader school community by attending special events such as parent nights, banquets, and fundraisers is also an important component of this role. Furthermore, the head coach is entrusted with managing the program’s budget in partnership with the Athletic Director.

Overall, this position requires a balance of strong leadership, strategic thinking, and a commitment to the school’s academic and spiritual mission. The successful candidate will be passionate about water polo, skilled in coaching young athletes, and dedicated to fostering an environment where student-athletes can thrive both on and off the court.
