Job Description
Metro Nashville Public Schools (MNPS) is one of the largest and most diverse school districts in the United States, dedicated to providing high-quality education to over 80,000 students across Metro Nashville-Davidson County. MNPS is committed to preparing students to excel not only academically but also in their future careers and life endeavors. Known for implementing innovative reform strategies, the district aims to be the highest-performing urban school district nationally. MNPS values collaboration and seeks passionate and effective educators, teacher leaders, and support staff who share a commitment to urban education and making a positive impact in the community. The district prides itself on fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for all employees and students, emphasizing equity, respect, and diversity in every aspect of its operations.
This opportunity is within the Nutrition Services department of MNPS, focused on supporting the preparation and serving of school meals in clean and health-compliant conditions. As a Nutrition Services Assistant, you will play a vital role in ensuring that students receive nutritious meals that comply with all health and sanitation regulations. The position is nonexempt, paid hourly, graded under the MNPS Support Hourly system (Pay Grade MNPS.SCH001-H), with an annual employment duration of 197 days. This role reports directly to the Nutrition Services Manager and offers a dynamic and hands-on work environment where food preparation, kitchen cleanliness, and customer service converge to support student well-being and health.
In this role, you will undertake various semi-skilled kitchen tasks such as slicing and chopping vegetables, cooking meats and vegetables, mixing pastries, and measuring ingredients accurately. Beyond food preparation, responsibilities include sanitizing kitchen equipment and surfaces to meet state health standards, setting up serving lines efficiently, and replenishing food during meal times. Customer interaction is also a key component, requiring friendliness and responsiveness to students' and teachers' inquiries, including those about the nutritional content of meals. Additionally, the position involves receiving supply orders, verifying shipments against invoices, storing supplies properly, and maintaining accurate inventory records to ensure continuous availability of necessary ingredients and materials.
MNPS places a strong emphasis on fostering a supportive and educational environment that attends to each student’s unique learning styles, interests, and needs. The district's vision is to be recognized as Tennessee's premier large school district, ensuring every student is known personally through data-driven and personalized learning experiences. This holistic approach extends to staff roles, including support positions like Nutrition Services Assistant, who contribute directly to student health and success. Working for MNPS means becoming part of a diverse team committed to equity, inclusion, and excellence in education. MNPS also abides by the American Disabilities Act (ADA), providing accommodations to qualified individuals and promoting a work environment that respects and values all employees and applicants.
