Job Description
Metro Nashville Public Schools (MNPS) is one of the largest and most diverse school districts in the United States, serving over 80,000 students in Metro Nashville-Davidson County. The district is widely recognized for implementing some of the most innovative reform strategies nationally, with a strong commitment to preparing students for success in higher education, career, and life. MNPS prides itself on its dedication to equity, inclusion, and personalized education by focusing on rigorous and engaging learning experiences tailored to meet the unique needs, interests, and passions of every student. MNPS offers a range of programs including advanced academics, visual and performing arts, special education, English language support, and STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) education—from Pre-K through graduation. As a public employer, MNPS values diversity and inclusivity, promoting equal opportunity and providing accommodations for qualified individuals with disabilities.
The role of Nutrition Services Assistant within Metro Nashville Public Schools is a vital position that supports the district’s commitment to student health and well-being. Under the supervision of a manager, this nonexempt, hourly support role involves assisting the school nutrition staff in preparing and serving meals in a clean, sanitary environment that complies with all health and safety regulations. The position is classified within the MNPS Support Hourly grade ladder with a defined pay grade and requires a commitment of 197 working days per year. Nutrition Services Assistants are responsible for a variety of kitchen tasks, including slicing and chopping vegetables, cooking meats and vegetables, mixing pastries, measuring ingredients, and ensuring food is prepared in the correct quantities following daily menu guidelines.
In addition to food preparation, the role involves maintaining cleanliness and sanitation of kitchen equipment, counters, tables, and floors daily, aligning with state health standards. Nutrition Services Assistants prepare the serving lines by filling steam table wells and arranging pans in proper sequence to ensure efficient and friendly service to students and staff. They serve appropriate portions, answer questions about food content or nutritional values, and manage the receipt, verification, storage, and inventory of food and supplies to guarantee continuous availability. This position requires strong communication skills, particularly in English, to interact with students, teachers, and team members effectively.
The Nutrition Services Assistant position offers an opportunity to contribute meaningfully to a dynamic and impactful educational environment by supporting student nutrition—a key component of academic success and overall wellness. Working with MNPS means joining a mission-driven organization dedicated to public education, equity, and community engagement. If you are passionate about food service, enjoy working in a team-oriented environment, and want to make a difference in the lives of thousands of students daily, MNPS invites you to apply for this essential position.
