Job Description
Dollar General Corporation is a leading American retail chain that has been delivering everyday value to customers for over 80 years. Known for its convenient neighborhood locations, Dollar General offers a vast range of frequently used products including food, snacks, health and beauty aids, cleaning supplies, basic apparel, housewares, and seasonal items at consistently low prices. With its enduring commitment to Serving Others, the company emphasizes not just retail business but fostering a work culture that values the unique strengths, perspectives, and contributions each employee brings to the table. Dollar General offers a diverse set of career opportunities across its many stores, Distribution Centers, Store Support Center, and Private Fleet Team, providing a dynamic environment for career growth and development.
The role of Assistant Store Manager at Dollar General is a vital leadership position that supports the Store Manager in maintaining a clean, well-organized store that prioritizes customer satisfaction and operational efficiency. This full-time position involves supervising store employees, managing merchandise presentation, handling paperwork, and preparing deposits, all while performing stocking and cashiering duties. The Assistant Store Manager acts as a key figure in ensuring the smooth daily operations of the store, contributing directly to profitability and safeguarding company assets by reducing losses. This role requires a hands-on approach, as the Assistant Store Manager is responsible for opening and closing the store, scheduling employees, providing adequate training, conducting safety meetings, and enforcing adherence to company policies and procedures.
In addition, the position demands a strong customer-service orientation, as well as the ability to manage merchandise flow including receiving, unpacking, restocking, rotating items, and building attractive merchandise displays that align with company planograms. The Assistant Store Manager also plays a critical role in inventory management by monitoring damages, markdowns, and scanning accuracy. Financial integrity is upheld through strict cashier accountability, key control, and security practices, with responsibilities that include authorizing refunds and overrides, counting register tills, and making bank deposits.
Beyond operational tasks, the Assistant Store Manager is expected to drive a vehicle for bank deposits, attend management meetings, and travel occasionally to other Dollar General locations as needed. The role demands physical stamina due to frequent walking, standing, bending, lifting up to 55 pounds, and working in a fast-paced and sometimes moderately noisy environment. While retail experience and supervisory experience are preferred, Dollar General values effective communication skills, problem-solving abilities, organizational competence, and a strong attention to detail.
Joining Dollar General means becoming part of a team where your contributions truly matter. Employees at Dollar General are encouraged to bring their best selves to work, grow through ongoing training and development, and thrive in a supportive environment that rewards dedication and hard work. Aspiring Assistant Store Managers have a unique opportunity to develop leadership skills, gain comprehensive retail management experience, and contribute to the success of a well-respected national retailer known for its mission of serving communities every day.
