The role of Assistant Store Manager at Dollar General is a vital leadership position within the retail environment, designed to support the Store Manager in maintaining a clean, well-organized, and customer-focused store. The Assistant Store Manager plays an essential role in managing daily store operations including supervision of store employees, merchandise management, completion of operational paperwork, and preparation of deposits. This role requires balancing operational tasks with customer service to maximize both profitability and customer satisfaction while safeguarding company assets and minimizing losses. Responsibilities extend beyond routine duties to include stock replenishment, cashiering, and assisting in the implementation of merchandising strategies such as planograms. The Assistant Store Manager must be capable of opening and closing the store, scheduling staff, conducting training and safety meetings, overseeing adherence to company policies, and maintaining accurate inventory through control of damages and markdowns.
Additionally, the person in this role supports financial integrity by ensuring strict cashier accountability, key control, and following security and cash control procedures, including managing refunds and overrides. Acting as the store’s leader in the absence of the Store Manager, the Assistant Store Manager must be a proactive problem solver with excellent communication skills and the ability to handle various situations effectively. They must also be physically capable of handling the demands of the retail environment, including frequent walking, bending, lifting, and occasionally driving to complete bank deposits and attend management meetings. Job Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent strongly preferred
- minimum one year of retail experience
- at least six months supervisory experience preferred
- ability to perform frequent walking and standing
- capacity for frequent bending, stooping, kneeling and lifting up to 40 pounds with occasional lifting up to 55 pounds
- willingness to climb ladders up to six feet
- adaptability to fast-paced and moderately noisy environments
- occasional exposure to outside weather conditions
- possess and use own transportation for bank deposits and meetings

- proficiency in basic mathematical calculations including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and percentages
- experience operating cash registers and generating reports
- knowledge of cash, facility and safety control policies
- knowledge of cash handling including cashier accountability and deposit control
- ability to drive own vehicle for bank deposits
Job Duties
