Metro Nashville Public Schools (MNPS) is one of the largest and most diverse school districts in the United States, located in Metro Nashville-Davidson County, Tennessee. Serving over 80,000 students, MNPS is committed to preparing its students to excel in higher education, the workforce, and life. The district is known for its innovative strategies and reform initiatives aimed at becoming the highest-performing urban school district in the nation. MNPS values diversity, inclusion, and equitable education opportunities for all its students and staff. The district supports personalized learning experiences that cater to the varied interests, passions, and needs of its students, ensuring that every student is known and supported on their path to success. MNPS offers a broad range of programs and services, including advanced academics, performing arts, special education, English language support, and STEAM education, from Pre-K through graduation.
The role of Assistant Nutrition Services within MNPS is a vital support position dedicated to assisting in the preparation and service of nutritious and appealing meals in the school environment, ensuring compliance with health and sanitation regulations. Under the supervision of the nutrition services manager, the Assistant Nutrition Services staff members contribute to the smooth operation of school kitchens by performing semi-skilled tasks such as slicing and chopping vegetables, cooking various food items, mixing pastries, and measuring ingredients according to prescribed menus. This role is critical in maintaining food safety and sanitary conditions within the kitchen, which includes cleaning and sanitizing kitchen equipment, floors, counters, and tables.
Assistant Nutrition Services employees are also responsible for setting up the serving lines, replenishing food quantities during meal service, and courteously serving students and staff. They handle inquiries about food content or nutritional information and maintain inventory by receiving and verifying supply orders and updating records accordingly. This position requires a high level of responsibility for ensuring that all food service activities meet district standards and promote a positive dining experience. The role is non-exempt, part of the MNPS Support Hourly grade ladder, and is classified at the MNPS.SCH001-H pay grade, with a starting wage of $19.47 per hour. The position follows an annual work schedule of 197 days and is based within the district's Nutrition Services locations.
MNPS is an equal opportunity employer fostering an inclusive work environment embracing diversity and prohibits discrimination based on protected characteristics. The district encourages open communication regarding accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) to ensure accessibility for all employees. Individuals working in this role contribute not only to the nutrition and well-being of students but also support MNPS’s mission to deliver excellent public education every day through collaboration, dedication, and a commitment to equity and student success. This role is ideal for individuals who have a passion for food preparation, enjoy working in team-oriented educational environments, and want to make a meaningful difference in the lives of students through quality nutrition services.
