Job Description

Sonesta International Hotels is the 8th largest hotel company in the United States and is growing rapidly. The company boasts a dynamic and diverse portfolio of more than 1,000 properties worldwide, encompassing full-service and focused hotels in major cities across eight countries. Sonesta stands out in the hospitality industry by blending a wide range of property types including owned, managed, and franchised hotels to meet the needs of today’s travelers. At its core, Sonesta is driven by a commitment to the human side of hospitality, delivering service with passion, loyalty with purpose, and experiences that genuinely connect with guests. This approach helps them maintain a strong competitive edge by consistently prioritizing guest satisfaction and employee engagement. The company culture emphasizes teamwork, quality, value, and extraordinary hospitality, which brings the essence of Sonesta to every stay and every guest interaction worldwide.

The Assistant General Manager (AGM) role at Sonesta International Hotels is a pivotal leadership position within the hotel management team. Reporting directly to the General Manager, the AGM plays a crucial role in the operational success of the hotel by focusing on key performance objectives that drive revenue growth, cost control, guest and associate satisfaction, and overall service and product quality. This position requires close collaboration with multiple internal teams, including marketing, revenue management, sales, accounting, facilities, human resources, IT, and procurement departments that provide essential support to the hotel. The AGM assists in ensuring that the hotel operations align with Sonesta’s brand standards and strategic goals.

This role involves overseeing the front office, housekeeping, food and beverage, and maintenance departments, ensuring seamless day-to-day operations. The Assistant General Manager is responsible for managing the hotel’s guest experience through adherence to Sonesta’s signature G.U.E.S.T. service standards and encouraging a culture of exceptional customer service among all associates. The AGM helps develop and implement sales and marketing strategies, coordinating with sales leadership to maximize business opportunities in the local market. They also collaborate with the revenue management team to optimize pricing and occupancy strategies, using property management and reservation systems such as Opera and Synxis.

In addition, the AGM supports budget planning and financial management efforts by working closely with the finance department and general ledger accountants to monitor operational and capital budgets, ensuring fiscal responsibility and clear communication of the hotel’s financial status to ownership. The role includes managing inventory procurement effectively while leveraging company purchasing programs and identifying cost-saving opportunities.

The Assistant General Manager is also responsible for enforcing compliance with company policies, standards, and all relevant local, state, and federal laws, particularly those related to health, safety, and the responsible service of alcohol. Acting as a manager on duty, the AGM serves as a key on-site leadership presence during various shifts, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and other critical times.

This position requires strong leadership, communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills, and a hands-on approach to hotel management. The ability to travel occasionally, work flexible hours, and manage physically demanding tasks is also essential. The expected salary range for this role is between $75,000 and $80,000, with actual pay depending on experience and specific qualifications. The role comes with a comprehensive benefits package, underscoring Sonesta’s commitment to employee well-being and growth. This includes medical, dental, and vision insurance, retirement plans with company matches, paid time off, and various employee perks that support both professional and personal development.
