Job Description

Petco Animal Supplies, Inc. is a leading pet specialty retailer in the United States, serving pet parents and their beloved companions for more than 60 years. Known as "where the pets go," Petco operates over 1,500 stores across the U.S., Mexico, and Puerto Rico, and boasts a strong presence with more than 29,000 passionate team members dedicated to enhancing the lives of pets and the people who love them. The company is committed to improving lives by doing the right thing for pets and pet parents, fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment where employees can be their authentic selves while pursuing rewarding careers. Petco's core values emphasize putting pets first by protecting and empowering them, fostering fun through connecting with the pet community, and driving success through teamwork and commitment as One Petco team.

Petco's veterinary division, Vetco Total Care, operates full-service veterinary hospitals and preventive care clinics, providing quality medical care to animals. With over 250 Vetco Total Care hospitals and numerous clinics, Petco supports pet health through expert services backed by advanced medical equipment, including ultrasound technology, heated hydraulic surgery tables, and digital X-rays (DDXR). Employees in these hospitals, including veterinarians, work in a collaborative environment emphasizing teamwork, ongoing education, and compassionate care for every patient.

The Veterinarian role at Vetco Total Care is a full-time, in-person position located in Brentwood, MO, at 8404 B Eager Road. This role is pivotal in delivering outstanding patient care, performing physical exams, diagnosing and treating diseases, and offering preventive care tailored to each animal's unique circumstances. The Veterinarian will also conduct routine and complex surgical procedures such as spays, neuters, abdominal exploratories, mass removals, and dental surgeries, contributing to comprehensive pet health management. This position demands proficiency in problem-based diagnostic approaches, meticulous documentation of medical records, and the ability to develop and execute detailed treatment plans.

In addition to medical responsibilities, the Veterinarian will participate actively in hospital rounds, collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, and contribute to the continuous improvement of hospital procedures. The role emphasizes compassionate communication with pet owners and stresses the importance of maintaining a professional demeanor even in emotionally charged situations. Reporting directly to the Hospital Medical Leader or Area Medical Director, the Veterinarian has the autonomy to make patient care decisions, underlining the importance of upholding Petco's veterinary standards and protocols.

This opportunity comes with a sign-on bonus of up to $55,000, acknowledging the essential role veterinarians play within Vetco Total Care. The position requires a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree or its equivalent from an AVMA-accredited institution, active licensure without contingencies in the state of practice, and relevant licenses such as DEA and Controlled Substance Licenses if applicable. Candidates should be comfortable performing anesthesia and routine surgical procedures, possess strong communication skills, demonstrate compassion and professionalism, and be open to learning and adapting to new protocols and treatment methods.

Vetco Total Care's work environment is primarily the veterinary hospital where physical activity such as bending, kneeling, lifting (up to 30 pounds), and standing for extended periods is common. The Veterinarian position offers a significant opportunity to contribute meaningfully to the pet community by providing high-quality care and fostering a positive, team-oriented atmosphere. The role also involves regular communication with clients, veterinary specialists, and product or service providers essential to hospital operations. Petco prides itself on being an equal opportunity employer, supporting diversity and inclusion across all levels of the organization.
