The role of Associate Director of Ingredient Development at HelloFresh is a strategic leadership position within the company's product innovation team. This role involves overseeing ingredient product development, product evaluation, commercialization, and supplier onboarding across HelloFresh’s diverse Meal Kit brands. As a highly visible and essential growth driver, the Associate Director plays a critical part in maintaining product standards that protect customers while pushing forward the company’s ingredient innovation pipeline. This is a hands-on role requiring expertise in ingredient sourcing, sensory evaluation, data management, and cross-functional project leadership. The ideal candidate will possess extensive experience in product commercialization, bringing a data-driven mindset to accelerate speed to market and foster strategic collaboration with suppliers.

In this role, you will develop and execute a comprehensive ingredient roadmap in partnership with culinary and brand teams to support exciting menu innovations. You will manage product investment budgets, ensuring alignment with cost and timeline objectives. You will lead the end-to-end stage gate process for ingredient commercialization, integrating sustainability and responsible sourcing criteria, and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements such as labeling, allergen management, and ingredient standards. You will also manage supplier relationships, sensory scorecards, master data repositories, and be an instrumental leader cultivating a high-performing team with strong culinary and food science capabilities.

Job Requirements

  • 8+ years of experience in food or beverage research and development, product development, and/or continuous improvement
  • People leadership experience preferred
  • Degree in food science or related field is an asset but not required
  • Knowledge of GMPs, HACCP, and food safety compliance
  • Familiarity with FDA/USDA ingredient regulations and labeling requirements
  • Proven product innovation and leadership in cross-functional stage gate processes
  • Experience managing test kitchen operations and documentation for evaluations
  • Strong quantitative and analytical skills with proficiency in G-Suite, Excel, and project management tools
  • Experience leading teams including direct and indirect reports
  • Ability to travel up to 10%

Job Qualifications

  • Total of 8+ years of experience in food or beverage research and development, product development, and/or continuous improvement experience

  • Successful track record of product innovation and leadership in a cross-functional stage gate process
  • Experience managing test kitchen operations and preparing samples and documentation for showings or evaluations
  • Strong quantitative and analytical experience including expertise with G-Suite, Excel, and project management systems
  • Experience managing and leading a team of direct and indirect reports
  • Flexibility to travel up to 10%

Job Duties

  • Work closely with culinary and brand teams to develop a new ingredient roadmap that drives menu innovation
  • Work closely with the sourcing and product teams to develop a roadmap of new ingredients and suppliers to qualify in support of supplier diversification
  • Oversee product investment budgets and ensure delivery against cost and timeline objectives for both new and existing ingredients
  • Lead the end-to-end stage gate process for ingredient commercialization, managing project timelines, milestones, and risk assessments from concept through launch
  • Incorporate sustainability and responsible sourcing criteria into ingredient evaluation
  • Ensure all projects align with regulatory compliance including labeling, allergen management, and ingredient standards
  • Develop new products jointly with suppliers to accelerate the ingredient roadmap
  • Develop and manage supplier sensory scorecards, specifications, and supplier onboarding requirements
  • Maintain the master data repository for supplier and ingredient data and specifications
  • Cultivate a high performing team with culinary and data-focused expertise
  • Lead other strategic initiatives as assigned
