Job Description

The Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center (ARC) is part of The Salvation Army, a renowned international evangelical movement committed to preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ and addressing human needs without discrimination. The Salvation Army ARC operates as a no-fee rehabilitation program, assisting men and women in overcoming challenges and achieving personal growth through a structured rehabilitation journey. The organization deeply values the dedication and contributions of its employees, recognizing their essential role in the success and maintenance of these vital programs. The Salvation Army is not only focused on spiritual outreach but also provides social and rehabilitation services, highlighting its holistic approach to community support and individual transformation.

As a faith-based nonprofit organization, The Salvation Army ARC emphasizes the integration of spiritual motivation with practical support services. This creates an environment where both employees and program participants are encouraged to thrive. In this setting, the Assistant Store Manager plays a crucial role by supporting the store's operations, which generate income to fund the mission's broader goals. The store serves as a social enterprise that directly supports ARC's rehabilitation programs, making the position integral to sustaining the organization's ability to serve its community.

The role of Assistant Store Manager at the South San Francisco location is a full-time, benefit-eligible position offering a competitive pay rate of $22.00 hourly. This role is responsible for overseeing daily store operations, particularly in the absence of the Store Manager, ensuring the store meets its sales and income goals while managing expenses to maximize profitability. The position is essential in fostering a positive and mentoring environment for ARC beneficiaries — individuals engaged in the rehabilitation program — by collaborating closely with program staff to implement effective Work Therapy Assignments (WTA).

The Assistant Store Manager will handle various operational aspects, including opening and closing procedures, point-of-sale management, inventory control, and merchandise standards compliance. This position also entails employee scheduling, payroll record maintenance, and assisting with hiring, training, and coaching store team members to ensure professional growth and operational efficiency. Moreover, the role demands maintaining high levels of customer and donor satisfaction through excellent service and community relations.

Emphasizing safety and security responsibilities, the Assistant Store Manager oversees store currency protection, inventory safeguarding, and building security measures, including alarm system protocols outside business hours. The role requires a hands-on approach in managing daily back-room and donation center operations, supporting staff responsible for warehouse and merchandise processing to meet productivity targets.

Physical demands include the ability to perform a variety of tasks such as sitting, standing, walking, bending, lifting up to 50 pounds, and repetitive motions associated with retail store operations. The position necessitates strong communication skills, problem-solving abilities, teamwork, project management, and leadership qualities to effectively motivate and manage staff while ensuring organizational standards and goals are met.

This opportunity is ideal for candidates with at least two years of retail management or supervisory experience, preferably within a thrift store context, who possess a high school diploma or equivalent and can demonstrate proficiency with MS Office applications. Candidates must also hold a valid driver's license, pass a background check including criminal history and sex offender registry clearance, and show proof of insurance with reliable vehicle access. The Salvation Army values leaders who are innovative, enthusiastic, detail-oriented, dedicated, and motivated by goal completion, flexibility, and making a meaningful impact.
