The Assistant Store Manager plays a critical role in the successful operation of the store, acting as the direct support to the Store Manager and stepping in to lead the store in their absence. This position requires a hands-on leader proficient in managing daily store operations, supervising staff, and upholding the company’s standards and best practices. Responsible for multiple operational aspects such as payroll administration, scheduling, compliance with safety and regulatory standards, merchandising, loss prevention, and customer service, the Assistant Store Manager ensures the store environment is safe, clean, and inviting for both customers and employees.
Key responsibilities include leading and coaching associates to optimize productivity while minimizing unnecessary steps, analyzing store performance and expense control metrics, and maintaining compliance with state, local, and federal regulations. The role places significant emphasis on organizational development, supporting recruitment, training, and employee relations alongside management of store expenses to remain within budget. The Assistant Store Manager also takes charge of sustaining a secure store environment by enforcing safety policies, conducting monthly safety meetings, and promoting a culture of safety among all personnel.
In terms of customer service and store presentation, the Assistant Store Manager ensures associates deliver courteous, friendly, and professional service while carefully supervising merchandise presentation and store cleanliness according to company guidelines. This role demands someone who can balance operational rigor with a customer-focused approach, driving both sales and service excellence.
This position calls for a candidate with at least two years of retail management experience who can effectively motivate teams, manage multiple priorities, and maintain high standards of customer service. Strong communication skills, the ability to exercise sound independent judgment, and proficiency in basic retail math are essential. Work schedules may include evenings and weekends to meet the demands of retail operations. Physical requirements include the ability to use store equipment, stand and move throughout the store for significant periods, and occasionally perform physical tasks such as lifting and reaching.
As an equal employment opportunity employer, Ross Stores embraces diversity and inclusion, committing to fair hiring and promotion practices without discrimination, thereby fostering a respectful, supportive workplace where everyone can thrive. This role offers a meaningful opportunity for individuals looking to advance their career in retail management while contributing to a reputable and fast-growing retailer.
