The role of Assistant Store Manager at Kroger involves a comprehensive understanding of all department operations and store management duties to ensure smooth and efficient store performance. This position requires shared responsibility for various operational and human resources aspects, including scheduling, security, maintenance, safety, sanitation, ordering, administration, and employee-related tasks. The Assistant Store Manager supports the Store Manager and associates in delivering a best-in-class customer experience and fostering an environment that encourages associate engagement and development.

Key responsibilities include assisting in the planning, implementation, and execution of merchandising and operational initiatives alongside department heads to maximize sales and profit. Strategic planning and communication regarding store-level action plans and associate insights are essential aspects of this role. The Assistant Store Manager plays a critical part in managing store operations during the Store Manager's absence and drives the achievement and surpassing of sales, wage, and profit budgets along with other operational goals such as safety and shrink reduction.

This role demands strong leadership capabilities with an emphasis on inclusive behavior and high standards for customer service. The Assistant Store Manager works collaboratively with other management team members, department heads, and associates to identify opportunities for improvement and develop timely solutions. They also work on building positive relationships within the local community and, when applicable, with union representatives.

Additionally, responsibilities include assisting with labor management, supply cost controls, performance feedback, compliance with federal, state, and local laws, and enterprise policies. The role requires excellent communication skills to effectively relay information and expectations to associates and coordinators.

Job Requirements

Job Duties

  • Assist store manager and associates in the achievement of a favorable customer shopping experience and develop associate interest in customer service and relations to enhance Kroger’s best-in-class reputation
  • Assist store manager in leading teams in planning, implementing and executing merchandising and operating initiatives
  • Assist store manager with developing action plans and communications to associates on Associate Insight survey results
  • Work with department heads and store associates to identify store opportunities, develop timely solutions and create action plans to ensure plan implementation
  • Role model and demand highest level of customer service and solve associate and customer issues and concerns
  • Manage total store operations in store manager’s absence
  • Achieve and exceed weekly, period, and annual sales, wage budgets, and profit budgets, as well as other targeted goals such as safety and shrink
  • Drive sales by working with department managers to produce and maximize sales and profits, reduce shrink and improve each store department’s contribution
  • Assist store manager in regular store-level financial performance discussions with associates regarding developing budgets and other targeted goals such as safety
  • Analyze and respond to competitive landscape within district and division
  • Demonstrate inclusionary leadership and expect inclusive behavior from associates
  • Utilize coordinators and other field staff to ensure store departments achieve sales and profit goals and ensure implementation of division merchandising plans
  • Promote and support strong relationships with local community organizations
  • Assist in building proactive and productive relationships with union representatives and business agents if applicable
  • Communicate necessary information to associates to help them effectively carry out duties
  • Serve as liaison to store, district managers and coordinators on effectiveness of division merchandising and operational plans and programs
  • Assist store manager in staffing, reducing turnover and increasing retention
  • Provide timely individual and department performance feedback to department heads and associates
  • Assist with labor management and supply costs on daily basis to meet customer service and financial targets
  • Ensure store compliance and associate knowledge of federal, state and local laws and enterprise policies
  • Supervise and coach direct reports on performance of their duties and complete performance reviews
  • Must be able to perform essential functions of position with or without reasonable accommodation
