This encompasses a broad range of tasks such as scheduling, security, maintenance, safety, sanitation, ordering, administration, and HR-related duties. The essence of the role is to ensure that the store runs smoothly and efficiently even in the absence of the Store Manager.
An Assistant Store Manager works closely with the Store Manager and department heads to strategize and implement operational and merchandising initiatives aimed at maximizing sales and profits while minimizing shrink and labor expenses. They play a key role in cultivating an outstanding customer shopping experience by promoting a customer-centric culture and mentoring associates to uphold Kroger’s best-in-class reputation for service. They are responsible for motivating teams, addressing associate and customer concerns, analyzing store opportunities, and formulating action plans to drive business growth.
In addition to operational leadership, the Assistant Store Manager assists in evaluating the store's financial performance, reviewing sales, wages, and profit budgets, and ensuring that these targets are met or exceeded. They also analyze competitive conditions within their district and division to maintain the store's edge in the marketplace. They are expected to demonstrate inclusive leadership by fostering an inclusive workplace and promoting positive relationships with the local community and, if applicable, union representatives.

They facilitate the timely dissemination of information to associates and support staffing efforts aimed at reducing turnover and increasing employee retention. Moreover, the Assistant Store Manager conducts coaching and performance reviews to enhance team effectiveness and ensure all associates comply with applicable laws and company policies. Overall, this position is integral to the achievement of Kroger's operational, financial, and customer service goals, reflecting its mission to enrich the lives of customers and communities it serves.
