This role is centered around the crucial position of assisting the store management team in all areas of store operations and human resources responsibilities. The assistant store manager will collaborate closely with store managers and associates to cultivate an excellent customer shopping experience and foster associate engagement in customer service and relations. This role requires managing multiple priorities — from driving sales and achieving budgets, including wage and profit objectives, to promoting a culture of inclusion and strong community relationships. The assistant store manager will also play a key role in staffing, retention, labor management, and compliance with federal, state, and local laws and company policies. They must be capable of stepping in to manage the entire store operation in the store manager’s absence, ensuring all departments work cohesively towards shared goals.
Moreover, this position involves coaching and supervising direct reports, providing timely feedback, and aiding in the professional development of department heads and associates. Communication is essential to this role, as the assistant store manager serves as a liaison between store staff and higher management, ensuring the smooth flow of information and effective implementation of division merchandising and operational plans.
Ideal candidates will have a minimum of a high school diploma or GED, a year of relevant management experience, and approval from higher management. Job Duties
- Assist store manager and associates in the achievement of a favorable customer shopping experience and develop associate interest in customer service/relations to enhance Kroger’s best-in-class reputation
- Assist store manager in leading teams in planning, implementing and executing merchandising/operating initiatives
- Assist store manager with developing action plans/communications to associates on Associate Insight survey results
- Work with department heads/store associates to identify store opportunities, develop timely solutions and create action plans to ensure plan implementation
- Role model/demand highest level of customer service and solve associate/customer issues/concerns
- Manage total store operations in store manager’s absence
- Achieve/exceed weekly, period, and annual sales, wage budgets and profit budgets, as well as other targeted goals (e.g., safety, shrink)
- Drive sales by working with department managers to produce/maximize sales and profits, reduce shrink and improve each store department’s contribution
- Assist store manager in regular store-level financial performance discussions with associates
- Analyze/respond to competitive landscape within district/division
- Demonstrate inclusionary leadership

- Utilize coordinators/other field staff to ensure store departments achieve sales/profit goals and ensure implementation/execution of division merchandising plans
- Promote/support strong relationships with local community organizations

- Communicate necessary information to associates
- Serve as liaison to store/district managers and coordinators on effectiveness of division merchandising/operational plans/programs
- Assist store manager in staffing, reducing turnover and increasing retention
- Provide timely individual/department performance feedback to department heads and associates
- Assist with labor management and supply costs on a daily basis to meet customer service/financial targets
- Ensure store compliance and associate knowledge of federal, state, and local laws/enterprise policies
- Supervise and coach direct reports on performance of their duties
- Complete performance reviews and provide feedback to direct reports
