Job Description
Kroger is a leading supermarket chain widely recognized for its commitment to quality products and outstanding customer service. As one of the largest grocery retailers in the United States, Kroger operates numerous stores that cater to diverse communities with a wide range of food, household, and specialty products. The company prioritizes core values such as respect, honesty, integrity, diversity, inclusion, and safety in every aspect of its operations, making it a trusted shopping destination. Kroger emphasizes creating a workplace culture that fosters growth, teamwork, and strong relationships within the local communities it serves.
The role of Assistant Store Manager at Kroger is a dynamic and pivotal position that involves a broad range of responsibilities aimed at supporting store management and contributing to the overall store performance. This position requires a hands-on leader who can effectively learn and oversee operations across all departments, including human resources, scheduling, security, maintenance, safety, sanitation, ordering, administration, and other store management functions. The assistant manager shares a collective responsibility with the store manager to ensure that the store meets and exceeds operational, financial, and customer service goals.
In this role, the assistant manager will actively assist the store manager and associates in enhancing the customer shopping experience by fostering a customer-centric environment. A key aspect of this responsibility is developing associate interest and involvement in customer service and relations, which supports Kroger's reputation as a best-in-class retailer. The assistant manager will also play a critical role in leading and guiding teams to plan, implement, and execute various merchandising and operational initiatives that align with company goals.
The position demands strong leadership skills to work collaboratively with department heads and store associates in identifying store opportunities, analyzing issues, and devising timely and effective solutions. Communication is crucial, as the assistant manager will help in developing action plans and conveying important feedback from associate surveys and performance metrics. An inclusive leadership style is essential to nurture a welcoming environment and promote diverse and inclusive workplace behavior.
The assistant store manager will manage total store operations during the store manager's absence, demonstrating accountability for sales targets, wage budgets, profit margins, and other key performance indicators such as safety and shrink reduction. This role also involves active participation in labor management and supply cost control to meet financial targets, as well as ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local laws as well as enterprise policies.
Beyond operational management, this role includes building positive relationships with local community organizations and union representatives where applicable, to foster collaborative and productive engagements. Supervisory duties include coaching and providing constructive performance feedback to direct reports and ensuring that all associates understand and comply with policies and regulations.
Overall, this role offers an excellent opportunity for individuals with retail management or department leadership experience who are looking to advance their career in store management within a respected and established company. The assistant store manager contributes directly to the store’s success and customer satisfaction, playing a vital role in maintaining Kroger’s standards and values.
