The role of Assistant Service Manager at Inland Kenworth's Montebello, California dealership presents a unique career opportunity for professionals eager to contribute to the success of a dynamic service department. As a key member of the dealership leadership team, the Assistant Service Manager plays a crucial role in assisting the Service Manager with the daily operations of a profitable and efficient service department. This position requires a proactive leader who can plan, organize, lead, and control service workflows while upholding high quality standards to meet customer expectations.

The Assistant Service Manager will be responsible for forecasting department goals, managing relationships with customers to encourage repeat and referral business, and ensuring the optimal performance of technicians by controlling workflow and utilization of their time. They will also contribute to the preparation and maintenance of the department's annual operating budget, foster collaboration among various dealership departments such as Parts, Body Shop, Sales, Administration, and Credit, and implement effective dispatch systems to maximize productivity.

Furthermore, the Assistant Service Manager will take on Service Advisor duties, including scheduling service appointments, managing repair orders, and providing accurate estimates to customers. Frontline customer interaction is a significant aspect of this role, where maintaining high customer satisfaction through consistent communication and follow-up is essential. Supervisory responsibilities also include assisting in hiring, training, motivating, and monitoring the performance of service advisors and truck technicians, ensuring a motivated and efficient team.

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
  • Post-secondary diploma or trades certification in a related field preferred
  • Heavy duty truck technical knowledge
  • Three years related experience and/or training including some supervisor or lead experience
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret financial reports
  • Strong leadership skills
  • Excellent customer relations skills
  • Strong business ethics with a professional approach at all times
  • Functions well with large volume and fast-paced work environment
  • Valid driver’s license

Job Duties

  • Works with the Service Manager to forecast goals and objectives for the department and strives to meet them
  • Establishes and maintains good working relationships with customers to encourage repeat and referral business
  • Monitors and controls the performance of the department using appropriate reports, tracking systems, and surveys
  • Ensures that the daily inventory of technicians’ time is consistently sold to service customers
  • Contributes to the preparation and maintenance an annual operating budget for the service department
  • Maintains open communications and good relationships with other department personnel - Parts, Body Shop, Sales, Administration, and Credit
  • Maintains high-quality service repairs and minimizes comebacks
  • Implements and maintains an effective dispatch system
  • Schedules shop work to facilitate maximum productivity in accordance with dealership policy and the technician skill level required
  • Service Advisor responsibilities including scheduling service appointments, greeting customers, writing up repair orders and providing accurate estimates to customers and communicating with customers throughout the service engagement
  • Opens and closes repair orders
  • Establishes and maintains 24-hour follow-up with all customers to confirm satisfaction with the service experience and handles any customer issues promptly
  • Ensures the safety of all employees
  • Assists with Supervising the Service Advisors and Truck Technicians
  • Assisting with the hiring, training, motivating and monitoring the performance of all service department staff
