The role of Assistant Nurse Manager for the Med Surg Telemetry unit at UM UCH is a full-time, exempt position requiring rotating shifts primarily from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. with the flexibility to support leadership across all shifts 24/7. This leadership pathway role serves as a critical frontline operational leader with direct accountability for shift-level clinical performance, team effectiveness, patient outcomes, and staff engagement. Partnering closely with the Nurse Manager, the Assistant Nurse Manager ensures continuous operational excellence, high-quality patient-centered care, and compliance with regulatory standards within the assigned operational area. The role is integral in fostering a culture of safety, professionalism, and continuous improvement through active collaboration with interdisciplinary teams and providers.

Key responsibilities include managing clinical operations, overseeing staffing, productivity, and safety metrics, and supporting the professional development of the nursing team through onboarding, competency validation, mentoring, and succession planning. The Assistant Nurse Manager takes part in hospital and unit safety initiatives, addressing risks and promoting positive safety outcomes. Additionally, the role emphasizes the importance of evidence-based practice and innovation, encouraging the integration of research findings to improve healthcare delivery. Continuous monitoring of quality outcomes, workforce engagement, and resource utilization form an essential part of this role, with the aim of aligning unit strategies with the broader organizational mission and vision.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing required
  • licensure as Registered Nurse in Maryland or eligibility via compact state agreements
  • three years of clinical experience
  • advanced certification within three years of assuming role
  • ACLS, BLS and/or other required certifications
  • ability to provide care appropriate to patient populations
  • knowledge of growth and development over lifespan
  • strong verbal and written communication skills
  • group leadership and collaboration abilities

Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing required
  • graduate degree must be in nursing if bachelor’s degree is not in nursing
  • licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Maryland or eligibility due to compact state agreements
  • three years of clinical experience required
  • advanced certification (e.g., NE-BC, CEN, PCCN) required within three years of assuming role
  • ACLS, BLS and/or other certifications matching patient populations served
  • knowledge and skills to provide appropriate care to patient populations
  • knowledge of growth and development principles over lifespan
  • strong verbal and written communication skills
  • demonstrated effectiveness as a group leader and participant
  • ability to collaborate with healthcare and administrative leadership

Job Duties

  • Assumes delegated operational accountability for clinical performance, staffing, quality outcomes, patient experience, and team engagement in partnership with the Nurse Manager
  • Engages in delivery of high-quality, patient- and family-centered care
  • Participates in rounding, provides real-time feedback and service recovery, monitors safety and quality metrics, and communicates performance outcomes
  • Escalates quality, safety, and experience concerns and resolves issues
  • Accountable for unit-level performance metrics including quality indicators, safety outcomes, patient experience, workforce engagement, productivity, and throughput
  • Collaborates with providers, interdisciplinary partners, and unit team members to set goals and improve patient care
  • Utilizes engagement data, turnover trends, and retention metrics to address workforce challenges and develop improvement strategies
  • Controls onboarding, orientation, and competency validation for new and existing team members
  • Develops emerging leaders through mentoring, coaching, and succession planning
  • Enforces regulatory standards and supports compliance efforts
  • Monitors staffing plans, productivity, overtime utilization, and supply expense trends
  • Fosters a healthy, inclusive work environment and supports retention initiatives
  • Provides coaching and feedback, addresses performance issues, and supports peer review
  • Promotes shared governance and team member involvement in decision-making
  • Supports innovation and evidence-based practice
  • Maintains individual clinical competency to support direct patient care when needed
  • Translates organizational goals into unit-level strategies
  • Implements High Reliability Organization principles and performance improvement strategies
  • Ensures patient safety through participation in hospital, department or unit patient safety initiatives
  • Reports adverse events and safety concerns
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
