Job Description

Barnes-Jewish Hospital at Washington University Medical Center is the largest hospital in Missouri and is nationally recognized as one of the top hospitals in the United States according to U.S. News & World Report. Serving as an academic medical center, the hospital features a distinguished staff composed of full-time academic faculty and community physicians affiliated with the Washington University School of Medicine. The hospital's commitment to excellence in patient care and nursing has earned it the prestigious designation as a Magnet Hospital by the American Nurses Credentialing Center, making it the first adult hospital in Missouri to achieve this honor. This distinction underscores Barnes-Jewish Hospital's dedication to providing exceptional clinical services and supporting the professional development of its nursing workforce. The hospital operates multiple acute care medicine units where patients are treated for a wide array of complex conditions including blood disorders, advanced endocrine diseases, heart and renal failure, gastrointestinal ailments, infectious diseases, asthma, and cystic fibrosis. With high patient acuity, the hospital offers advanced training and development programs that elevate nurses to the highest standards of clinical functioning. Each medical unit in the hospital is led by a clinical manager and a lead charge nurse, supported by an advanced practice nurse, and complemented by a multidisciplinary team including case managers, social workers, physical therapists, dietitians, and pharmacists. This team collaborates closely with physicians, nurses, and patient care technicians to provide comprehensive, patient-centered care.

The role of Medicine/Pulmonary Registered Nurse (RN) at Barnes-Jewish Hospital is a full-time position offering either four 10-hour shifts or five 8-hour shifts during the day. The position comes with a $15,000 sign-on bonus eligibility and benefits that begin the first day of the month following the start date, covering medical, dental, vision, life insurance, legal services, and other perks. This leadership opportunity is ideal for Registered Nurses who hold a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and have at least two years of RN experience, particularly those seeking to advance their careers within a challenging, supportive, and resource-rich environment.

In this position, the nurse engages in high-quality care provision for patients facing acute medical conditions within the pulmonary and medical service lines. The role demands close teamwork with physicians and other healthcare professionals to implement timely and effective treatments tailored to each patient's developmental and age-related needs. The RN is responsible for crafting and executing collaborative care plans based on thorough patient assessment, diagnosis, and medical treatment plans. This is a safety-sensitive role requiring constant alertness and adherence to strict safety standards to maintain the highest level of patient care and personal safety.

The role extends beyond direct patient care to include personnel management responsibilities such as hiring, training, performance evaluations, and professional development of nursing staff. The nurse manager participates in the development and adherence to departmental budgets related to staffing, revenue, and expenses, managing these within the dynamic healthcare business environment. The position involves scheduling and payroll oversight, staff communications, conducting meetings, staffing assignments, and making recommendations for annual salary increases. The RN also plays a critical role in maintaining productivity standards aligned with departmental goals and policies.

Overall, this position at Barnes-Jewish Hospital offers a unique blend of clinical nursing care and leadership in one of the nation’s top-tier healthcare institutions.
