The Ohio State University’s Student Life Dining Services is a premier department dedicated to serving approximately 50,000 individuals daily through 32 dining locations across campus. It administers the student meal plan to around 15,000 residential students and focuses on delivering high-quality, diverse food options, including catering services, grab n go items, event food, and baked goods. The department greatly emphasizes customer service excellence, compliance with food safety standards, and staff development within a dynamic and fast-paced environment.
The role of Assistant Manager - Culinary Production Kitchen is a vital leadership position within Dining Services that oversees a seven-day operational food production kitchen with multiple shifts, covering various production stages such as opening cold production, closing prep production, bakery prep, packing production, food truck prep, and deliveries. This role supports the management of a large team comprising 10-15 full-time regular employees and 50-70 part-time student employees. Responsibilities include personnel functions such as hiring, orientation, training, supervision, and performance management. Candidates will assist in managing all aspects of kitchen operations including forecasting, procurement, production, service, and maintaining customer relations.
The assistant manager is also responsible for fostering an inclusive and diverse team culture while ensuring meals meet prescribed quality and safety standards. They manage student managers and the student personnel program while maintaining compliance with Ohio Department of Agriculture regulations and training staff in good manufacturing practices (GMPs). The position requires flexibility to work varying shifts including some weekends, nights, and holidays. Job Requirements
- High school diploma or GED or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Ability to work some weekends, nights and holidays
- Ability to lift and move heavy items up to 50 pounds
- Strong organizational and leadership skills
- Excellent communication skills
- Familiarity with food safety regulations and compliance
- Ability to foster a team-oriented, diversity-valued work environment
Job Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED plus 4 years relevant experience
- 1-3 years experience in food service management or related field
- Excellent customer service skills
- Ability to read and interpret safety rules, receipts, operating instructions, and procedure manuals
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondence
- Ability to regularly lift and/or move up to 20 pounds and frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds
- Bachelor’s degree in hospitality management or related field (desired)
- 6 years relevant experience (desired)
- Knowledge of ServSafe Sanitation guidelines or similar food handler program (desired)
- Experience working with HACCP principles (desired)
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills (desired)
- Experience managing Classified Civil Service, bargaining union members, and student staff (desired)
- Knowledge of computerized ordering systems (desired)
- Ability to speak effectively before groups (desired)
Job Duties
- Assist in management of daily Culinary Production Kitchen operations including multiple shifts and production styles
- Oversee hiring, orientation, and training of full-time and student employees
- Supervise and manage performance of 10-15 full-time employees and 50-70 part-time student employees
- Ensure meals are prepared and served according to prescribed standards and food safety regulations
- Manage student managers and student personnel programs
- Assist with compliance to Ohio Department of Agriculture standards and enforcement of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs)
