Job Description

This role is for an Assistant Food Service Manager position within an elementary school kitchen and cafeteria setting. It is a full-time position (FTE 1.0) with a salary of $16.80 per hour and based on a 178-day school calendar. The Assistant Food Service Manager is responsible for assisting with kitchen supervision, food preparation, cashiering activities, and maintaining accurate accounting and inventory records. The role requires overseeing the daily cash balancing and bank deposits, supporting the Food Service Manager with order tracking, and leading in their absence. The position also involves training new employees and ensuring compliance with health, safety, and sanitation standards.

The Assistant Food Service Manager must be highly organized, capable of multitasking in a fast-paced kitchen environment, and knowledgeable of district policies related to free and reduced meal programs. This position demands that the individual be skilled in food preparation techniques according to standardized recipes, managing food orders and inventory, supervising staff performance, handling multiple administrative tasks such as recordkeeping and cash management, and maintaining clean and safe kitchen conditions.

Working closely with the Food Service Manager, this role supports smooth operation of the cafeteria while encouraging a team atmosphere and fostering positive relationships with school staff and students. The Assistant Manager is expected to attend training workshops and stay current with food safety and sanitation procedures. Essential physical abilities include the capacity to stand for extended periods, lift and move up to 50 pounds, and operate kitchen and cashier equipment efficiently and safely. The position is subject to an annual performance evaluation by the assigned kitchen manager.

This role is vital to the school’s mission of providing quality meals and ensures consistent adherence to district and department policies, helping promote a safe, efficient, and customer-focused food service environment for the students they serve.

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalency
  • current Serve Safe Certification
  • ability to perform cashiering duties and balance daily cash

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED equivalency
  • any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work

Job Duties

  • Perform cashiering duties including entering customer transactions and handling cash
  • balances cash received daily and maintains records
  • prepares daily bank deposit
  • drops deposit at the bank based on district procedures
  • maintains accurate mileage records for reimbursement
  • assists with maintenance of food service records such as production sheets, food orders, milk orders, inventory, time sheets, meal counts and other related records
  • able to step in to the manager role with ordering and production records when manager is absent
  • attends approved training and workshops
  • participates in preparation of food within an established system following standardized recipes, preparation and serving methods and food handling techniques
  • assists with ordering food and supplies to maintain stock at required level
  • assists with receiving food and supplies
  • follows defined standards of sanitation for personnel, food preparation and kitchen equipment
  • understands the accepted procedures for operating, cleaning and caring for each major piece of equipment
  • follows established procedures for service and distribution of meals
  • assists with new employee orientation and training
  • assists with supervision and evaluation of Food Service employees
  • performs all work duties and activities in accordance with District policies, procedures and safety practices
