Job Description
This role is offered by a school district food service department and focuses on maintaining food service procedures in an elementary school setting. The district operates a school food service program aimed at providing nutritious and well-prepared meals to students to support their health and learning experience. Working within a school environment, the district emphasizes compliance with health, safety, and nutritional guidelines, ensuring food services are delivered safely and effectively for the student population. This role is integral in supporting these efforts by assisting with various operational and supervisory tasks in the school's kitchen and cafeteria.
The position is classified as an Assistant Manager in the food service operations at the elementary school level, with a salary of $16.80 per hour and a work calendar of 178 school days. This role reports directly to the Food Service Manager and plays a key part in maintaining smooth food service operations. The primary responsibilities encompass assisting with kitchen supervision, food preparation, and food service cashier duties. Additionally, this position supports administrative functions such as maintaining financial records, balancing cash receipts, preparing bank deposits, and ensuring compliance with district and department policies.
In this capacity, the Assistant Manager ensures that all food preparation and serving methods adhere to standardized recipes and food safety procedures. The role requires proactive involvement in ordering and receiving supplies, helping to maintain proper inventory levels. During periods of absence by the Food Service Manager, the Assistant Manager may be called upon to take on additional responsibilities to ensure continuity of service. There is also a significant emphasis on training and supervising new employees, as well as assisting with the evaluation of staff within the food service department.
The work environment consists primarily of a kitchen and cafeteria setting within an elementary school. The assistant must be knowledgeable about the operation of kitchen equipment, proper sanitation standards, health and safety guidelines, and district-specific food service policies including those related to free and reduced meal programs. Effective communication skills, both written and oral, are important as the role involves interacting with school staff, students, and supervisors. The position also demands strong organizational skills to maintain accurate records, manage multiple tasks simultaneously, and adhere to deadlines.
Physical requirements include the ability to work on feet for extended periods, lift or move items weighing up to 50 pounds, and perform manual tasks required in food preparation and kitchen operations. The position demands clarity of speech and hearing for effective communication, visual acuity to comprehend written instructions and ensure food safety, and manual dexterity to operate cash registers and kitchen equipment.
Overall, this Assistant Food Service Manager position offers a critical support role within the school district’s food service team, dedicated to providing high-quality meals in an environment that promotes student well-being and complies with district standards. The role offers a stable employment opportunity within the school calendar year framework, with appraisals conducted annually by the assigned kitchen manager. Employees are expected to uphold confidentiality, safety, and professional standards, contributing to the success of the district’s food service program.
