The role of Assistant Cook Manager at West Fargo Public Schools is a pivotal position within the Food Services department. This ongoing 182-day role for the 2026-2027 school year is full-time, with scheduled hours from Monday through Friday. Compensation aligns with the Classified Salary Schedule for 2026-2027, beginning at $19.35 to $21.75 per hour depending on experience. Reporting directly to the Kitchen Manager at the assigned location, the Assistant Cook Manager supports the management of the school kitchen's daily operations.

In this essential leadership role, the Assistant Cook Manager is responsible for ensuring the preparation and service of meals to students and staff uphold the highest standards of food quality, safety, and customer service. The position demands strong collaboration skills to foster positive relationships within the school community, including learners and staff. The role requires effective communication, as the Assistant Cook Manager routinely provides training and supervision to food service employees, evaluates their performance, and coordinates with building administrators to maintain operational excellence.

Additionally, the Assistant Cook Manager carries significant responsibility for inventory management and control, including conducting weekly inventories of freezers, coolers, and storerooms, and assisting with ordering supplies. Attention to detail is paramount, including adhering to budgeted staffing levels and ensuring product quality, portion control, and waste minimization. The role also involves performing cashiering duties, maintaining accurate records of food sales and meal production, and supporting internal promotional programs within the food service department.

Physical demands include frequent standing, walking, bending, reaching, and occasional lifting of up to 30 pounds. The work environment may involve exposure to high or cold temperatures, cleaning chemical compounds, and potentially sharp kitchen equipment, all within a setting that varies from moderate to loud noise levels.

This role is suitable for individuals with a High School diploma or GED, prior experience in large-scale food preparation, basic computational skills, and preferably experience within a school setting. Completion of a food safety training course within six months of hire is mandatory. The Assistant Cook Manager must possess strong language skills to read, write, comprehend instructions, and communicate effectively, along with discretion, good judgement, punctuality, and the ability to manage multiple demands with professionalism and resilience.

Job Duties

  • Assist the Kitchen Manager in overseeing meal preparation and service

  • Assist with weekly food and supply orders

  • Assume Kitchen Manager responsibilities in their absence
