The Assistant District Manager role at Waste Connections is a pivotal leadership position designed for an experienced professional who thrives in a dynamic and operationally intensive environment. Serving as a critical link between the employees, customers, municipal partners, and corporate leadership, the Assistant District Manager acts with ownership mentality, managing all facets of operations as if the business were their own.

This role requires a strategic thinker with strong leadership and communication skills to effectively manage personnel, operational budgets including profit and loss (P&L), regulatory compliance, and customer relations. The Assistant District Manager directs activities including employee selection, coaching, performance evaluations, and disciplinary actions to build a capable and motivated team. Additionally, this position collaborates with city, municipal, and county agencies to maintain and enhance service contracts, negotiate new agreements, and improve the quality and scope of services offered.

Ensuring compliance with OSHA, DOT, EPA, and company safety standards is a fundamental duty, with the Assistant District Manager responsible for implementing processes and procedures that promote operational efficiency and safety. This role demands a strong understanding of regulatory requirements and hands-on involvement in maintaining facility operations, equipment utilization, and overall customer service excellence.

Job Requirements

  • 3-5+ years experience managing a business unit preferably in transportation industry with full P&L responsibility
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • Both hauling and landfill responsibilities preferred
  • Knowledge of OSHA, DOT and EPA guidelines
  • Computer proficiency including Microsoft Excel/Word and ability to learn and use specialized company applications
  • Willingness to relocate for promotional opportunities

Job Qualifications

Job Duties

  • Oversees personnel needs of the route sites including selecting, coaching, disciplining and training employees and evaluating employee performance
  • Responsible for termination, compensation and promotion decisions
  • Partner with local city, municipal and county agencies to ensure business is providing top notch customer service and identify ways to improve services
  • Works with municipalities to renew contracts and negotiate new contracts
  • Executes necessary precautions to ensure safety and compliance with Company, DOT, OSHA and other standards and regulations
  • Responsible for developing and implementing processes and procedures for personnel to operate in a safe, efficient and cost effective manner
  • Develops short-term and long-term goals and action plans with Division Vice President
  • Has P&L and capital responsibility for each site
  • Participates in regular P&L reviews to ensure budgets are met
  • Develops and implements programs for optimal equipment utilization, equipment maintenance, and labor and material costs
  • Responsible for compliance to applicable environmental laws and regulations
  • Has overall responsibility for facility maintenance, customer service, sales, and operations
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned
