Job Description
Southern Methodist University (SMU) is a nationally ranked private university located in the vibrant city of Dallas, Texas. Renowned for its commitment to academic excellence, cutting-edge research, and a strong focus on student success, SMU enrolls over 12,000 students from all 50 states and more than 80 countries. The university offers a rich and diverse educational environment through its eight schools, including Dedman College of Humanities and Sciences, Cox School of Business, Lyle School of Engineering, Meadows School of the Arts, Simmons School of Education and Human Development, Dedman School of Law, Perkins School of Theology, and Moody School of Graduate and Advanced Studies. With a mission to develop ethical and enterprising leaders, SMU emphasizes leadership development, meaningful research, community service, international study, and innovative programming that prepare students for global impact.
The Assistant Director, Student/Young Alumni Engagement (HR Title: Alumni Relations Officer II) is a key role within SMU's Development and External Affairs (DEA) department. This full-time, on-campus position is entrusted with leading strategic engagement and fundraising initiatives targeted at undergraduate students, recent graduates (0–10 years), and next-generation alumni (11–20 years). The role focuses on nurturing lifelong relationships with these groups by creating and implementing comprehensive programs and events that foster philanthropic behavior and sustained donor participation. The position manages important volunteer groups like the Student Philanthropy Council and the Young Alumni Board, overseeing recruitment, training, and strategic planning to drive advocacy and annual giving.
This role also manages a targeted portfolio of approximately 50 to 75 leadership-level prospects, developing personalized cultivation and solicitation strategies that promote meaningful philanthropic support. The Assistant Director partners with various university offices and leverages data-driven insights along with multi-channel communication strategies, including social media and digital platforms, to maximize engagement and giving from younger alumni demographics. In addition to program oversight, the role involves budget management, event planning, and collaboration with Advancement colleagues to align efforts with broader fundraising priorities. The position requires strong organizational skills, experience in volunteer and project management, proven fundraising expertise, and the ability to communicate effectively across diverse university constituencies.
SMU offers competitive salary commensurate with experience and qualifications and a supportive work environment committed to diversity and inclusion, professional development, and employee wellness. This role is pivotal in securing the future philanthropic support essential to advancing SMU’s mission and growing its impact on students, faculty, and the wider community.
