Job Description

Florida Southern College (FSC) is a private liberal arts college located in Lakeland, Florida, renowned for its commitment to providing a transformational educational experience that emphasizes academic excellence, leadership, and community involvement. Established in 1883, FSC is distinguished by its beautiful campus, innovative programs, and vibrant athletic department, which plays a pivotal role in fostering school spirit and engaging the student body and broader community. The college competes in NCAA Division II athletics and supports a diverse range of men’s and women’s sports, as well as club sports, which attract considerable attention and participation both regionally and nationally. FSC’s athletic programs are integral to the college’s mission of promoting personal development, teamwork, and excellence in all endeavors, making them a dynamic and exhilarating environment for sports communication professionals.

The Assistant Director of Athletic Communications at Florida Southern College plays a critical role in supporting and enhancing the visibility and reputation of the college’s athletic programs. This full-time position involves a broad spectrum of responsibilities aimed at publicizing 20 men’s and women’s NCAA Division II intercollegiate sports and four club programs. The role is designed for a dynamic and resourceful individual who can effectively engage and inform various stakeholders — including students, faculty, alumni, fans, and the local media — through strategic media relations and creative content generation. The Assistant Director is the primary communications officer for designated sports and is expected to produce compelling stories, press releases, game reports, and multimedia content that highlight the achievements and narratives surrounding Florida Southern Athletics. They will also collaborate closely with coaches, athletes, and the marketing department to consistently promote and elevate the FSC brand across local, regional, and national markets.

An essential function of this role includes supervising and mentoring student workers, managing media relations and social media platforms, coordinating game day operations, and assisting with the production and broadcast of sporting events. This position requires proficiency in video production and editing, strong written and oral communication skills, and the ability to work within a fast-paced environment while maintaining professionalism and attention to detail. The Assistant Director also contributes significantly to the development of FSC’s broadcast capabilities and the enhancement of digital platforms such as the athletic department’s website and social media accounts. Collaborating with various stakeholders, this role ensures that all athletics communications efforts align with the college’s vision, mission, and values, ultimately contributing to the department’s success and positive public perception.

By working in this capacity at Florida Southern College, the individual becomes part of a passionate team dedicated to celebrating athletic accomplishments and fostering an inclusive and spirited campus culture. The college’s commitment to professional development and continuous improvement is reflected in the opportunity for this Assistant Director to engage with cutting-edge communication technologies and participate in programs aimed at deepening their expertise in sports information and media relations. Additional benefits include comprehensive health and wellness plans, retirement options, tuition reimbursement, and paid time off, which collectively make this an attractive opportunity for qualified candidates seeking to advance their career in athletic communications within a supportive collegiate environment.
