The Division of Student Life at the University of Iowa embraces innovative ideas and collaboration to provide life-changing experiences for students. It encompasses 15 diverse departments focused on creating educationally purposeful services and activities that foster student success within and beyond the classroom. Among these departments is the IMU Event Services Department, which specializes in comprehensive event planning and execution for student organizations, university departments, and external clients.
The Assistant Director of IMU Event Services is a pivotal role within the department, acting as the lead event planner and primary coordinator for complex university events hosted at the Iowa Memorial Union and other university-managed venues. This full-time position is responsible for planning, directing, coordinating, and evaluating all facets of event development and execution. The Assistant Director also provides leadership and mentorship to professional staff and student employees, ensuring high standards in customer service and event execution. This role demands strategic collaboration with various campus partners including facilities, catering, audiovisual, and custodial teams to deliver exceptional events. The Assistant Director supports departmental initiatives, strategic planning, and assessment efforts, and serves as Manager on Duty as assigned. This position plays a critical role in maintaining efficient event operations and elevating the client experience at the university’s central event venues.

Job Requirements
- A bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and supervisory experience
- Some (6 months - 1 year) administrative experience in event programming or event management
- Some (6 months - 1 year) administrative supervisory experience
- A valid driver’s license and ability to meet and maintain University of Iowa Driving Policy
- Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills
- Demonstrated experience creating and maintaining a welcoming and respectful environment
- Experience with computer applications preferably MSOffice
- Experience with event management computer programs and digital display systems specifically Visix digital display, Event Management System (EMS), and Visio room diagram programs
- Some (6 months - 1 year) knowledge of custodial management including custodial equipment and practices
Job Qualifications
- A bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and supervisory experience
- Some (6 months - 1 year) administrative experience in event programming or event management preferably within a collegiate setting
- Some (6 months - 1 year) administrative supervisory experience
- Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills
- Demonstrated experience creating and maintaining a welcoming and respectful environment
- Experience with computer applications preferably MSOffice
- Experience with event management computer programs and digital display systems specifically Visix digital display, Event Management System (EMS), and Visio room diagram programs
- Some (6 months - 1 year) knowledge of custodial management including custodial equipment and practices
- Demonstrated experience working with bargaining unit employees
- Some knowledge of university policies, procedures, and regulations
Job Duties
- Serve as lead planner for major university, departmental, student organization, and external events
- Coordinate event logistics, budgets, timelines, room configurations, and service requirements
- Supervise and mentor assigned staff and student employees
- Provide exceptional customer service and client consultation
- Collaborate with facilities, catering, audiovisual, custodial, and campus partners
- Assist with strategic initiatives, assessment efforts, and departmental projects
- Serve as Manager on Duty as assigned
- Provide leadership in event planning processes, customer service standards, and event execution practices
