Job Description

The Iowa Memorial Union (IMU) Event Services Department at the University of Iowa is a dynamic and integral part of the campus community, dedicated to providing exceptional event planning and execution services. This department collaborates closely with student organizations, university departments, and external constituents to create memorable and impactful experiences. Through strategic planning, meticulous customer service, expert space management, and precise operational coordination, the IMU Event Services Department supports a wide range of events, from major university functions to smaller departmental and student organization gatherings. The department's commitment to excellence ensures that every event carried out within the Indiana Memorial Union or other venues managed by the university runs smoothly and successfully.

The Assistant Director of IMU Event Services is a pivotal role within this vibrant department, serving as the lead event planner and primary coordinator for complex events hosted across various university venues. This full-time position encompasses a broad spectrum of responsibilities including planning, directing, coordinating, and evaluating all facets of event development and execution. The role demands a high level of leadership capability, as the Assistant Director oversees professional staff and student employees, providing mentorship and support to foster a collaborative and efficient work environment. This position also actively engages with campus partners such as facilities management, catering, audiovisual services, custodial teams, and other stakeholders to ensure an integrated approach to event delivery. The Assistant Director plays an active role in driving strategic initiatives, contributing to assessment efforts, and supporting departmental projects aimed at refining and enhancing event services. In addition, the Assistant Director is often called upon to serve as Manager on Duty, exemplifying leadership and accountability for event operations during critical times. Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and supervisory experience
  • six months to one year administrative experience in event programming or event management preferably within a collegiate setting
  • six months to one year administrative supervisory experience
  • valid driver's license and ability to meet and maintain University of Iowa Driving Policy
  • demonstrated written and verbal communication skills
  • demonstrated experience creating and maintaining a welcoming and respectful environment
  • experience with computer applications including MS Office
  • experience with event management computer programs and digital display system such as Visix digital display, Event Management System (EMS), and Visio room diagram programs
  • six months to one year knowledge of custodial management including custodial equipment and practices
