The Assistant Deli Manager role at Sacramento Natural Foods Co-op plays a crucial leadership position within the deli department, reporting directly to the Deli Manager and overseeing deli clerks. This non-exempt position involves managing all operational aspects of the deli, especially during the absence of the Deli Manager. Job Requirements
- Three plus years of previous experience in customer service
- Two plus years previous experience in food service purchasing, preparation, or merchandising perishable products
- Maintain and update ServSafe certification
- Comprehend complex instructions, correspondence, and memos
- Communicate effectively and respectfully with staff and customers of diverse backgrounds
- Present information effectively in one-to-one and small group settings
- Perform basic math operations mentally and using standard measurements
- Apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions
- Use Microsoft Word, Excel, email, website and time clock software proficiently
- Use recipe management, inventory control, and scaling software proficiently
- Be frequently standing for extended periods
- Ability to lift and move up to 30 pounds frequently and up to 50 pounds occasionally
- Adhere to department dress code and safety protocols
- Be available to work hours based on business needs
- Follow all safe food handling guidelines
- Maintain regular attendance and punctuality
- Demonstrate dependability and commitment to department goals
- Resolve problems in a timely and constructive manner
- Manage difficult or emotional customer situations professionally
Job Qualifications
- Minimum three years of customer service experience
- Minimum two years of food service purchasing, preparation, or merchandising experience with perishable products
- Current ServSafe certification or ability to obtain
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to understand and follow complex instructions
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, email, and time clock software
- Experience with recipe management and inventory control software
- Demonstrated leadership and supervisory skills
- Ability to handle multiple tasks effectively and maintain focus
- Commitment to cooperative values and customer service excellence
- Problem-solving and decision-making abilities
- Understanding of labor and legal guidelines related to food service
- Experience working in diverse team environments.
Job Duties
- Uphold all co-op policies, procedures and expectations
- Ensure effective and efficient day-to-day deli operations under the direction of the Deli Manager
- Exceed customer expectations for service and ensure a welcoming environment for diverse backgrounds
- Develop and maintain attractive, clean, and full merchandise displays
- Ensure compliance with food safety, weights and measures, and security regulations
- Develop and implement department operating standards and procedures
- Supervise, mentor, and evaluate deli clerks and manage employee performance
- Support equipment maintenance and cleanliness
- Assist with scheduling, budgeting, and monitoring department financials
- Participate in recruitment, training, and professional development of deli staff
- Support co-op marketing and outreach initiatives
- Maintain accurate administrative records and ordering processes
- Address and report employee performance and conduct issues promptly
- Promote cooperative values through leadership and teamwork
- Manage labor allocation, breaks, and adherence to dress code.
