The Department of Probation, operating within Stanislaus County, is currently recruiting for the position of Assistant Cook I. This entry-level role is vital within the food service operations of the Probation Department, providing essential support in preparing and serving meals to departmental staff and inmates. The position requires working under close supervision, performing routine tasks such as cleaning kitchen utensils and equipment and assisting with food preparation. The Assistant Cook I will handle various kitchen responsibilities, including operating kitchen equipment like microwaves, coffee machines, blenders, mixers, and meat slicers. Job Qualifications

  • knowledge of methods, procedures, materials and equipment involved in large scale food preparation and storage
  • understanding of sanitation and personal hygiene principles in food preparation and service
  • principles and practices of safety related to food service cleaning
  • basic math skills to maintain inventory and calculate food quantities
  • ability to follow simple verbal and written instructions
  • ability to read English to comprehend therapeutic diets, work sheets and recipes
  • capability to work under fluctuating temperature conditions
  • ability to lift, carry or push supplies weighing up to 50 pounds
  • maintain professional attitude when working with inmates and staff
  • learn methods for large scale food preparation and special diets
  • utilize kitchen equipment efficiently
  • work with cleaning supplies
  • prepare and serve food attractively
  • physical ability to lift, bend, stoop, stand, push, pull, squat, twist, and turn
  • learn to use a pallet jack
  • properly measure and record food amounts

Job Duties

  • Clean and prepare vegetables and fruits
  • operate kitchen equipment including microwave, coffee machines, blender, mixers, and meat slicer
  • prepare sandwiches, coffee, custards, and gelatins
  • serve food in a cafeteria setting
  • prepare meals in accordance with the therapeutic diet manual
  • perform a variety of cleaning and custodial work such as washing dishes, pots, pans, and kitchen utensils
  • load, unload, operate and clean dishwasher
  • mop floors
  • clean and sanitize all kitchen surfaces and refrigerator walls and floors
  • dispose of garbage in compactor or dumpsters
  • store, rotate, and distribute food and supplies
  • prepare and serve between meal nourishment
  • transport food to appropriate destinations
