Job Description
Methodist Children's Home (MCH) is a respected organization dedicated to the care, development, and support of children and youth facing a variety of life challenges, including behavioral issues, developmental delays, mental health needs, and trauma. The Assistant Coach role at MCH plays an essential part in enriching the lives of resident student-athletes by providing quality coaching and mentorship under the guidance of the Athletics Director and Director of Athletics. This part-time position, offering a starting pay of $21 per hour and averaging around 30 hours of work per week, is critical in ensuring that student-athletes not only develop their athletic abilities but also acquire key life skills such as teamwork, sportsmanship, responsibility, and resilience. The Assistant Coach is expected to work in alignment with MCH's trust-based relational intervention (TBRI) techniques, promoting trauma-informed care and fostering supportive, nurturing relationships.
The role requires a professional who is emotionally and intellectually mature, with a deep understanding of working with youth who face unique challenges. The Assistant Coach will be involved in coaching practices and assisting with game day preparations, ensuring compliance with safety and licensing standards, and maintaining the cleanliness and organization of athletic facilities and equipment. Additionally, the position involves collaboration with various organizational departments and active communication with stakeholders such as staff, teachers, vendors, donors, and visitors.
Key responsibilities also include providing transportation for student-athletes using agency vehicles, reinforcing positive behavioral models, and promoting an environment conducive to personal growth and community spirit. The assistant coach's ability to balance nurture and structure, effectively communicate, regulate behavior, and uphold strong moral and ethical standards is vital to the success of the role. Given that the schedule may include evenings, weekends, and holidays, flexibility and a valid driver's license are essential. The agency supports the communication needs of this position with a technology stipend and provides vehicles for travel to events.
Education and experience preferences include a bachelor's degree and a background in coaching basketball or football, with additional preferences for experience coaching other high school sports. Annual training is mandatory to maintain compliance with licensing standards and to enhance professional development. Job Requirements
- At least 21 years of age
- Valid Texas driver's license
- Excellent driving record meeting insurance and agency standards
- No criminal history
- Acceptable professional references
- Ability to work part-time with a flexible schedule including evenings, weekends, and holidays
- Ability to operate and drive agency vehicles
- Commitment to complete required training annually
- Physical ability to meet job demands
Job Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree preferred
- Background in coaching basketball or football preferred
- Experience in coaching other high school sports preferred
- Ability to work effectively with youth who have behavioral issues and trauma
- Demonstrated competency in Trust-Based Relational Intervention (TBRI) techniques
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to maintain professionalism and ethical standards
- Ability to work flexible hours including evenings, weekends, and holidays
- Valid driver's license and clean driving record
Job Duties
- Provide quality instruction in assigned sports
- Infuse practices and activities with opportunities for student-athletes to learn and practice MCH Life Skills, being a good teammate and good sportsmanship
- Ensure all practices and activities are operated in compliance with the rules and guidelines established to ensure the safety of student-athletes and participants
- Work together with team members to ensure a professional work environment and the effective use of TBRI techniques in work with student-athletes
- Assist the Athletics Coordinator and Director of Athletics in implementing practice plans and successfully running practices
- Assist the Athletics Coordinator and Director of Athletics in successfully and efficiently running game days
- Maintain compliance with applicable licensing and accreditation standards
- Foster positive, interactive, and supportive relationships between the students, coaches, direct care staff, and faculty to encourage a community of enthusiasm and spirit
- Provide transportation for student-athletes using MCH vehicles to and from athletic events
- Ensure equipment and facilities are clean, properly maintained and used safely
- Work collaboratively in a proactive manner with other departments
- Ensure all facilities and equipment are clean, organized, and maintained
