Job Description
BJ's Wholesale Club is a leading membership-only warehouse club that is powered by a dedicated team of over 30,000 employees. Known for providing exceptional value and great deals, BJ's Wholesale Club serves families by helping them save on the products that matter most. With a strong focus on purpose and opportunity, BJ's fosters an inclusive environment where every team member can contribute meaningfully and grow professionally. BJ's commitment to its employees can be seen in its comprehensive benefits package designed to support the health, well-being, and future of its team members both on and off the job. The company prioritizes weekly pay, free memberships, generous paid time off, flexible health benefits, retirement savings plans, and stock purchase opportunities, making it an employer of choice for many.
The Assistant Closing Manager role at BJ's Wholesale Club is integral to maintaining the club's operational excellence during closing hours. Working closely with the Closing Manager, this leadership position focuses on driving club performance through effective team management and departmental oversight. The Assistant Closing Manager specifically oversees the recovery, utility, and perishable departments, which include produce, meat, bakery, deli, dairy/freezer sections, as well as overnight preparation to ensure all areas meet cleanliness and stocking standards for the next day. This role acts as the Manager on Duty (MOD) when assigned, shouldering full responsibility for club operations, team leadership, and Member engagement.
Essential to the role is maintaining compliance with food safety regulations, requiring a valid ServSafe Food Safety Certification. For those in Florida, the role also mandates a qualifier certification for retail propane oversight and a yearly forklift license certification, with BJ's covering the associated costs. The Assistant Closing Manager is also a key player in audit compliance efforts, onboarding, training, and certification to ensure food safety and operational standards are met.
This position demands strong leadership competencies, including strategic thinking, effective communication, team development, and conflict resolution. The Assistant Closing Manager is expected to model change, build high-performing teams, and deliver measurable results by setting clear expectations and following up consistently. They are detailed in coaching and fostering a culture of continuous learning and inclusion, promoting a safe and collaborative environment for both team members and Members.
Responsibilities also encompass delivering an exceptional Member experience by ensuring GOLD Member Standards—encompassing greeting, anticipating, appreciating Members, and maintaining fast, friendly, clean, and fresh club conditions—are consistently met. The Assistant Closing Manager is responsible for monitoring department performance, managing inventory levels and product freshness, enforcing sanitation standards, and resolving Member concerns promptly and effectively.
Other duties involve managing end-of-day club execution, maintaining operational functionality of service areas, supporting audit readiness, and conducting quality and date checks on products. Collaboration with other managers and department leads is vital to continuously improve closing routines and overall club performance. This role also emphasizes cost discipline and financial performance, utilizing data-driven decision-making to identify areas for improvement.
Physically, the job requires frequent movement on hard surfaces, occasional bending, pulling, reaching, and regular lifting of up to 30 pounds, with occasional heavier lifting assisted by others. The environment exposes the Assistant Closing Manager to temperature extremes, loud noises, and cleaning agents commonly found in perishable areas. Maintaining all training and certifications is mandatory to ensure operational safety and compliance.
Starting compensation for the Assistant Closing Manager position begins at $20.25 per hour and varies based on location, education, experience, and qualifications. BJ's Wholesale Club values authentic, individual skills and experiences in its hiring process and supports team members who embrace continuous learning and leadership development. This role is perfect for candidates passionate about retail management, food safety, and delivering world-class service in a fast-paced, customer-focused environment.
