The Graduate Providence, located in the heart of downtown Providence, Rhode Island, is a landmark hotel managed by Highgate. This 294-room historic hotel, designed by Warren and Wetmore—famous architects behind New York City’s Grand Central Station—has been a centerpiece of Providence’s cultural and social scene since 1922. Today, the Graduate Providence remains a cherished local tradition and a member of the Historic Hotels of America, embodying a deep connection to the city’s heritage.

We are currently seeking an Assistant Chief Engineer to join our dedicated team at the Graduate Providence. This crucial role involves overseeing the daily operations of the Engineering Department to ensure the property remains safe, efficient, and well-maintained. The Assistant Chief Engineer will step into the responsibilities of the Director of Engineering in their absence, managing administrative, financial, and operational aspects related to engineering. This position requires a service-oriented mindset with a focus on maintaining excellent guest and staff interactions, adhering to compliance standards, and implementing preventative maintenance programs. The successful candidate will play an active role in budget management, staff training, and ensuring all emergency and life safety systems are functional, inspected, and certified.

Candidates for this role must bring a hands-on approach to managing hotel facilities, including expertise in HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and boiler operations. Experience with steam boilers and the ability to obtain a Boiler Operator’s license within 90 days are required. The role demands physical strength and stamina, the ability to work under pressure, and strong problem-solving capabilities. Additionally, the Assistant Chief Engineer will assist with vendor contracts, special projects, renovations, and energy conservation initiatives, always maintaining compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations including the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). This is a yearly compensation position offering the opportunity to contribute to a prestigious, historic property within a globally recognized hospitality company.

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • At least 3 years of progressive facilities management experience in a hotel or a related field
  • HVAC, electrical, plumbing, boiler operations and general maintenance skills
  • Ability to obtain a Boiler Operator license within 90 days of hire
  • Must be able to lift up to 100 pounds occasionally
  • Must be able to convey information and ideas clearly
  • Must work well in stressful, high-pressure situations
  • Must maintain composure and objectivity under pressure
  • Must be effective in problem solving
  • Must be effective at listening and clarifying concerns
  • Must be able to work with financial data
  • Travel related to company business sometimes required
  • Long hours sometimes required

Job Qualifications

  • At least 3 years progressive facilities management experience in a hotel or a related field
  • Or a 2-year college degree and at least 1 year of related experience
  • 4-year college degree preferred
  • HVAC, electrical, plumbing, boiler operations and general maintenance skills required
  • Must have the ability to obtain a Boiler Operators license within 90 days of hire date
  • Rhode Island Refrigeration License preferred
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Must be able to convey information and ideas clearly
  • Must be able to evaluate and select among alternative courses of action quickly and accurately
  • Must work well in stressful, high-pressure situations
  • Must maintain composure and objectivity under pressure
  • Must be effective in handling problems in the workplace, including anticipating, preventing, identifying, and solving problems as necessary
  • Must have the ability to assimilate complex information, data, etc, from disparate sources and consider, adjust or modify to meet the constraints of the particular need
  • Must be effective at listening to, understanding, and clarifying the concerns and issues raised by co-workers and guests
  • Must be able to work with and understand financial information and data, and basic arithmetic functions

Job Duties

  • Approach all encounters with guests and employees in a friendly, service oriented manner
  • Maintain a warm and friendly demeanor at all times
  • Assist in developing and implementing plans to maintain property, equipment, grounds and other assets in a safe and acceptable state of repair
  • Supervise and train all Engineering Staff in standard operating procedures and loss prevention standards
  • Monitor and adhere to annual budget for department
  • Assist in developing financial forecasts and actively participate in monthly P&L review meetings
  • Implement preventative maintenance program for all hotel equipment
